  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

OMG! She is worse off then we thought. Please help!

Good morning....it is morning, isn't it??????

Thank you everyone for the shared knowledge, the research that was done for me when I wasn't in a position to even think, the well wishes and the healing thoughts and prayers. You all make up a loving community that I am proud to be a part of.

Sorry for the delay in posting. I know how hard it is to wait, but when we aren't feeding, we're trying to catch small naps. Don't forget....I'm OLD!

I was waiting at the vet this morning when they opened. Even though she had been to the vet yesterday, she felt like she was burning up. Vet said, "nope, she doesn't have a fever." Can ya'll say Worried Momma that overreacts? :)

Kismet weighs 23.8 pounds, but should weigh about 45. Both vets have thought she's roughly a year old. She is severely anemic and loaded with hook and round worms. Even though the skin scraping came up negative, we're pretty sure she has demodex. Her eyes were gooping up really bad, and I was concerned about that, but the vet said it was normal; her body isn't making tears right now because of her advanced state of anemia.

The picture above was taken last night with our daughter, Nellie. The picture just doesn't come close to showing how skinny Kismet is. We'll try to get some more later that better show her true state. She is doing great with the rice and chicken, always wanting more (especially the chicken - she'll fit right in this PMR household once she's a little further along). We're giving her one-half to three-quarters of a cup every 2-3 hours. She's not much of a drinker, so we're floating a piece or two of chicken on top of her Pedialyte and she'll take a half cup or so during the feeding.

The vet said she really needs to sleep 22-23 hours a day (woohoo!!!). She needs to conserve her energy as much as possible, so we'll be carrying her to the yard for the potty breaks for a while yet.

For a girl that has been through so much, she shows remarkable resilience and almost no fear. She is surprisingly confident and stable. Even in her weakened state, she is curious and wants to check out her surroundings, including the three cats that stare at her in the crate. She isn't afraid of them, and doesn't seem to mind at all that they are around, even going up to one and they gently nosed each other. That may all change once she sees the giant monster that is her new big brother. LOL

Thank you all again for everything. Time to go feed the baby and a cat nap for the old ladies before it's time to give the big kids their lunch.

Ab- such huge respect for your compassion. She's going to be fine- I can feel it!

Bless you for stepping in and stepping up to do what is right for this girl. Easy does it...one step at a time and nature will take it's course for the healing that needs to happen.

Can't wait for more photos of her. :)

Thank you for going the extra mile and rescuing that poor girl. She will not forget this as you took her in and nursed her when she was on the verge of death. Takes a very special kind of person to do that.

I just can't even imagine what is going through her mind. I hate people!! I'm so glad you have her. I was looking at the pic you posted & half wondering if maybe she's part Plott Hound? A couple of the pics I found on google look similar, but I think at her current state it's hard to tell. :( give her tons of hugs & kisses from us

We just passed another milestone. We have poop!!! A nice poop at that. She seems to be house trained. She has not gone in her crate.

She is very itchy. Any suggestions besides benadryl? I would like to try a mild topical. I have lavender spray but it is very pungent and I'm afraid it might be overwhelming for her. We have coconut oil but I'm afraid she will lick it off and do more damage than good. I can't stay in there in watch her, the vet stressed that other than food, rest is the most beneficial to her. If we are in the room with her, Miss Curiosity will stay awake.

Curiosity is a great sign, she's rallying! Hurray! Take a long hot soak, have a nap and recharge.
I'd say, no, to lavender. I think it might just exacerbate the issue. Coconut won't hurt her if it's pure.
Good poop, Great! Clean up, I think is important, you don't want the others catching anything. I think you're doing wonderfully. I can't wait for the next update and more pics. I'm keeping you all in my prayers.

Kudos to you for helping this girl.
When she is up to it a colloidal oatmeal bath
can help sooth the skin.
Jars of baby food are what worked best
with Ninja when we had our scare 2 months ago.
They contain compact easy digestible nutrition and
high moisture to help get fluids in.
We found the state of hydration made a big difference
in how much food he would be able to take.
Healing wishes your way.

You are a champion AB. I went through this with my Doberman (I stoled/rescued him) and I know it is hard but if I can do it you can do it. just like everyone said many light meals and fortified liquids are good. The eye goop should clear up once you get her hydrated enough and get some iron in her blood. Dogs are so tough and can overcome thing that would kill a human. My rescue lived to be just days away from 18 years old. Dig in and do your best and it will be good enough.

Love makes them tough, makes them fight to live. Kismet has a reason to live now...someone loves her.
