Just taking a poll on how long it took you to potty train your Mastiff?

I've never used treats or the nose rubbing...just the stubborn, you are going to potty train whether you like it or not method. :) Actually, I train to "Do your business" so if the dogs are messing around outside, all I have to say is "Do your business" and they'll go. Our old dog Zodian was so conditioned to this that we hated saying it to him because he would literally stop, get a panicked look on his face and then go immediately. It just seemed cruel to say it. LOL. Haven't housetrained a mastiff yet but our lab took a week (maybe less) and our English Bulldog, who is housetraining right now, took about a week and a half. We are currently on day 6 of no accidents in the house but she is hard to gauge when she needs to go out.

I have always found that it is not so much training a dog as it is training the owner.

We are working with our 7 week old EM. He will be 8 weeks on 8/7/11. We have had him for 9 days. I know, very young which is a whole other story I will post called "Why you must find a good breeder." He has never had an accident in his crate and we currently let him go 4-5 hours in the crate at night. During the day, we take him at least every hour while he is awake or immediately after he wakes up or eats. He has not pooped in the house or his kennel despite the fact he has the hook worms and runny stools. He has piddled a couple of times in the house. He will go to the door but it we don't see it quickly, he will piddle. So, although he is young he seems to be catching on quickly. He is doing better than I expected at his young age.

Do any of you have doggie doors? I have had doggie doors for my dogs for years when I had newfies. Currently have two poms and am looking at an English Mastiff. When I am not home my dogs are kenneled in the laundry room and back hall with a doggie door into the side yard so they can be in the air conditioning or go outside as they see fit. Little dogs are a PITA to potty train. i never had any dificulty with the newfies and a doggie door so am thinking iw =t will work the same with a mastiff. Anyone else use doggie doors?

Yep, I have a dog door in the utility room that leads to the enclosed patio. I brought home Reilly at 4 months (Tibetan Mastiff) and didn't have a single accident inside, he immediately followed Djouli (7 yr old female TM) outside and did his business.

I got so lucky, I know!

My son and I each took a weeks vacation back to back just to crate train and house break Sarge. We made this plan for when we were supposed to get him at almost 9 weeks. So when we had to pick him up early (6 weeks), I wasn't sure how successful we would be. I had the first week so we used a crate at night and if we could pay obsolute attention to him. I got up every 2 hours the first few nights and took him out to potty and we took him out about every hour during the day. By the end of the first week, I was able to let him go 5 hours at night and by the end of the second week (8 weeks) he can go 7 hours without going in his crate. He has never went in his crate at all, but did piddle a couple of time when we didn't pay attention during the day. He will go to the door if he has to go. So I would say he basically had it down after a week, but I am comfortable with him now as long as we give him frequent potty breaks during the day. I was surprised he could hold his bladder that long at 8 weeks.

Sorry, I forgot I posted on this string on 8/5. So although my post in an update, it is repetitive.

I'd say a month before I really believed that she was housetrained. This is my first Mastiff so I'm assumming its a trait of the breed to be this easy to housetrain?
