How much did you pay for your dog?

Does anyone else get irked by this question? Why do people think it's ok to go up to a complete stranger and ask how much they paid for anything, let alone something considered by many to be a member of the family. I don't think it's anyone's business and would like to say as much, but I get asked this a lot at my job and don't want to be rude to our clients. I usually end up giving some random price, or if they guess I tell them they're right.

How do you all handle this question? Does anyone else find it rude?

Depends on my mood. It's also like someone asking you how much you earn.

But yeah, some people I'll tell if they seem really interested and some people I'll just tell that he wasn't cheap.

I dont get offended because i've been asked it since mine was a puppy. Everyone is so interested in my dog when they see it, when they ask i just figure there asking because they want to look into buying one. I could totally see why it could be offensive though! Some times I say he wasnt cheap instead of giving a number, if they were interested in getting one they can do there research on it

I think it depends on how they phrase it. If they are interested in the breed then I answer. If they are just fishing to be judgemental, then it irks me.

I have people ask all the time because my girl comes to work with me, seems to kinda piss them off when I say she was given to me=)

People ask all the time and I give the one of these three outlandish answers.

I tell them I paid $4200 for the dog and another $1500 for pick of the litter. I then proceed to tell them how there are 18 grand champions in the line and how it was worth it because this litter was bred for the little white patch of fur on Molli's chest.

or

I didn't pay anything, my brother and I were breaking into houses one night and ended up stealing about 7 puppies.

or

I saw her tied up to a pole outside of Starbucks and after 30 min no one came out to get her so I took her home.

Out of these 3 answers people actually are more willing to give me dirty looks over paying that much than stealing her....lol.

I have never asked, but honestly I am really curious what the general ranges are for some of the other Mastiff breeds. I have no idea. Our bullmastiff cost us about 1500.00 after we got her on a plane etc and up to us in Alaska. I have no idea what the price ranges for pups of good quality are in the other breeds.

We were in the $1500 range with shipping. I get irked when it's a judgmental, but if someone seems seriously interested in the breed, I answer honestly. I liked Farakin's response though :) !

Yeah, I got tired of the people exclaiming they would never pay that much FOR AN ANIMAL!!!! It's my companion, can't put a price on that.

LMAO @ Farakin.

I also take my boy to work with me, so it's a daily occurrence. Gets a little taxing. Especially when you know there is no genuine thirst for knowledge.

I might use the gift angle.

When I was talking with breeders the lowest price I was quoted for a pet puppy was $1800. But I did only make it to the numbers conversation with two breeders. (The others had just had a litter and weren't having puppies any time soon.) I ended up co-owning a show quality boy.

I always tell people how much I paid but then make sure to give them the typical 30 min lecture on mastiffs in general and why cheap is NEVER a good idea when it comes to these dogs...

£250 or 387.45 U.S. dollars. But then Marley is a Cross :)

Recently saw a pedigree Blue cane corso puppy crossed with a Pedigree Blue Neapolitan..............So very very tempted.............

Hmm, about 5k by the time you add up the $500 doggie door, new door plus installation to hold a 29" doggie door, flights for two to go get her, hotel and one way car rental to bring her home.A puppy with her front end in your lap for the whole ride home.....PRICELESS!

I don't take it personally from strangers but from friends and family I just tell them "I don't like saying it out loud" I usually get an awkward laugh like they aren't sure if they should believe me or not. What I do hate is when they ask me how much I payed for his ear crop :/ Yeah I know, it's bad - we wont go back - we love him anyway!
