This is not directed to you dvdman it is just my take on it and what my opinion is on it all. I am not saying I am right or wrong but this is how I feel about it
I am lucky enough to have a boyfriend who is equally a Mastiff lover, but we love all four legged animals so maybe this doesn't count but here is my take on it all. I would rescue, save, rehabilitate and adopt/or keep for my own any animal. No matter the breed or sex of the breed. These four legged animals of all shapes and sizes no matter what they all love you unconditionally. They are there for you and with you every step of the way. Some protect, some guard, some herd, some sleep all day ,some fetch some dont. The point I am trying to make is they ask nothing from us but a warm bed, and a good meal, love and attention. Consider it done right? Not the case always.... too often I am searching for another Mastiff to add to my pack , (sometimes I just search the pet ads for any breed, but mostly Mastiff's) and I am never at a shortage for ads on the internet that have been posted by someone who brought a Mastiff and 1-2 yrs later are looking to give him/her away. Some ppl are "made to be" or are natural born Mastiff owners. Others are "wanna be owners" for social status. I am not saying everyone is or all Mastiff owners are only owning one for social status.
I am not like that but these ppl are looking to get rid of their boy/girl because **insert drum roll please** they are TOO BIG". I am not sure how anyone can purchase a Mastiff and after having that fur baby in the family for 2 yrs decide that oops I made a mistake. Do your research please. Mastiff's are Massive dogs. They are by no means lap dogs ( although mine are ) so this poor puppy is now on his or her way to rescue or SPCA or home after home. They are about to be tossed around from home to home until the ride stops and someone keeps him/her. This breed is not a breed you bring home and say surprise look honey we have a dog.
I bothers me that ppl get a Mastiff in my area the same ppl looking to give them away because they are too big is absolutely terrible. I wish I could take them all. It is not something to decide without a family meeting and EVERYONE has to be on board.
It is not their fault they are big babies. They didn't ask to be big, but they are and we love them and for the ppl who read this it is only my opinion and I am not saying anything directly to anyone on this forum it my area there are hundreds of ppl looking to re home their Mastiff because they are too big and it breaks my heart is all. Do your research on them and make sure everyone is on board so theses big babies have forever homes! To take in a Mastiff for whatever reason without everyone on board is a recipe for hurt and upset and not a good situation for anyone involved Mastiff included.
Ok dvdman this is directed at you but in a good way...lol
Dvdman your wife was very adamant about not wanting a big dog. Your children are not going to want to scoop 2lb poop and like someone said it is a lot of work and dedication to own a large breed dog. I hope all works out for you and your wife can find it in her heart to keep her and love her and accept. I hope the kids are on board with helping out and that it all works out well for you. I will look forward to a successful outcome chum hope all goes well. If not then PM me I will take her My boys will accept her no problem (they are neutered)
