Angus Update - Demodex + ACL

Will the Nu Stock absorb into his skin, or will it stay on his skin like Polysporin kind of? Could I potentially put it on him and leave him outside on our covered deck while it dries/soaks into the skin?

Hmmm.. I will have to look into this.

Yeah you can, it dries out and the smell is gone. Because it has mineral and pine oil and I think that stuff helps the sulfur stick onto fabric and hard to wash out if possible. Spots won't hurt, but what I did was I put it down his back and coat which you weren't suppose to put it on their coats lol which...took me a long time to get the oil out of his coat. I washed him like 3 x with dish soap and i just had to wait him out until the smell went away on its own.

Definitely get the Nu-Stock. It has helped our Boerboel out with several different things, Mange being one of them. It wiped it out after the second treatment and hair has grown back on places she's never really had hair before. It works amazing. It also immediately stops her itching and gets rid of the lumps when she gets eaten by mosquito's. Poor thing loves to lay out back at night and then comes in just covered in welts from them, Nu-stock takes care of it.
We bath ours, then dry well and then spread the Nu-stock over her and try and work it in well. Then wipe off any excess gobs with paper towels. After that keep an eye on the dog as the Nu-stock will start to move back out to the ends of the hair and rub off on things. I just wipe her down every couple of minutes for a little while after.
If you get it into clothes/linens it pretty much makes them smell like wet fart every time you sweat so wear things you don't care much about when applying and don't let the dog up on the furniture or bedding.
The results are well worth dealing with the smell though. instant relief from itching.

We didn't have an issue with getting the smell out of Lucia. We did the application, waited 3 days and bathed her. Repeated every 3 days 3 times total. Then about a week after the last application gave her a bath and just really scrubbed her down good with her regular dog shampoo. No more smell and Mange/itch free.

Okay!

Would you say no furniture throughout the entire process? Or could i apply it at night, crate overnight (without a blanket) and be good to go by morning?

Oh man, I need to hurry my ass up and get this stuff.

Small update on Angus' ACL:

I have been giving him daily Turmeric to help with the inflammation.

He has been getting Glycoflex Stage II. He gets 2 pills per day as per his weight.

He also gets chicken feet in his daily meals, but that isn't anything new, but I do think it assists with his leg.

He also got a new orthopaedic bed. He prefers to sleep on the floor as opposed to the couch and always lays down on his bad leg. I noticed that he would be really stiff when waking up. I laid down on his old bed and you pretty much just sink down and it's not much different than sleeping directly on the floor. I laid down on his new orthopaedic bed and it's much more supportive and my body didn't even sink into the bed far enough to hit the floor. He doesn't get stiff anymore when he wakes up and he actually sleeps so much more soundly, which is awesome.

During his naps where he has his injured leg exposed, I do take the time to massage the leg and do some prom exercises.

He is still on restricted activity outdoors and is always on-leash. Typically, he just goes out for potty breaks, but we make them extra long potty breaks and wander around the acreage and explore a little bit. He has been getting about 20 ft of leash to explore (this has been slowly upped from 4ft to 6ft to 15ft).

After Christmas he will definitely be doing some hydrotherapy, but early December is just too hectic as it is and I just do not have to the time to drive him into the next city, which is where the nearest indoor dog pool is possibly multiple times a week.

Thanks! He is doing so, so much better. With that though, he is now starting to want to run and be a puppy again so I am having to up my game with keeping him entertained and keeping the activity restricted. Luckily, every time that he lays down on his new bed, he is down for a good hour or so. :p

That's a very positive update on Angus. :)

I see that, too when Mateo gets up from sleeping, especially after being on the floor. Fortunately, with the cooler weather, he now prefers his beds (they are orthopedic, and help a lot!)

He is also getting turmeric every day (as do I- i think it's really potent stuff.)

What are "prom" exercises?

And I am sure Angus will love the hydrotherapy whenever you can manage it- the place I go to is awesome. :)

Prom stands for passive range of motion. I think it was smokeycat on that turned me on to them.

They are like, stretching exercises that assist in maintaining the flexibility and extension of whichever limb is in need of it. I found that they, along with massage, helped Angus' leg when it was stiffening up. While he's napping, I just gently move his leg around and stretch it out and then massage his leg and body. Its been a great sense of bonding for me.

I am very excited for hydrotherapy. I think it will do Angus a world of good. I am going to try my best to get him in ASAP. I am just worried about committing to something that I can't follow through on.

Oh, that sounds like what they showed me at the hydrotherapy place... I was already doing some massage with Mateo, but the stretching part was kind of cool.

You're doing great with him. :)

Thank you! You're doing awesome with Mateo, too. I'm confident that both of our boys will recover with conservative management.

I remember that stage of recovery, the joy that he's feeling better combined with the frustration that he's trying to do stuff that will set him back. I was never successful at getting Kryten to sleep on his bed but his recovery was mostly in the heat of summer. I don't envy either you or NYDDB trying to keep them calm during winter. Good luck.

Ha, no kidding... Summer would have been so much easier, as Mateo turns into a sloth during the hot weather anyway...

Oh, well, "C'est la vie."

Angus starts hydrotherapy next Tuesday. His pent up energy is starting to come out in destructiveness and possessiveness and aggression.

Sooooooo, it's off to swimming we go.

Perfect! Good decision... and I am sure he will love it, and it will be helpful.

And I get the boredom thing- Mateo just does "the stare", and pawing thing...following me around, bored. He has been used to big, long walks so I get it. But man...some days are difficult. I try to do several short walks, as well as indoor things, but it's not the same. Fortunately, he doesn't get destructive. Just needy, LOL.

The swim place has been a big highpoint for him to look forward to, though; he loves it there. :)

We do multiple walks, which are just extended potty breaks. Typically 10-15 minutes each.

He has decided that ALL toys are HIS. He and Thalia got into a fight the other day because of this (while our power was out of course) and Thalia sustained injuries to her eye, which may or may not fully recover. Her third eyelid was injured, giving her cherry eye (just eye drops to heal that part). There's also nerve damage causing her outer eyelid to be very droopy. Vet says that could take months to tighten back up, but no guarantee that it will actually go back to pre-injury.

That was my breaking point. Walking and indoor games/toys just are not doing it.

Sorry to hear about Thalia's eye- ouch.

Swimming (or underwater treadmill) will tire him out, and add some more stimulation to his life, which is a good thing.

Let us know how it goes.

I hope Thalia can make a full recovery.
