I would deff call in the morning especially if you start to see bilateral edema. Be careful with the fatty foods. The last thing you need is pancreatitis. Try to do boiled meat. If beef, boil and rinse to remove most the fat. If he normally eats kibble that could through him out of whack.

I'm glad Karen popped in. Pitting Edema is what I was thinking. I would ask your vet if that even crossed his mind. Otherwise with the fluid build up I keep thinking infection/bite. You have already paid your vet, I would at least call and ask about Pitting Edema.

Just curious if the tested for leptosporosis?
Please call and ask your vet what they tested for so you have an idea

Lepto test usually takes days to confirm so if it is suspected you treat anyway as the dog is usually in dire state or passed by the time the test comes back. Normally you get jaundice of the membranes, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammation around the eyes. My mother's dog had it and was all the sudden having accidents, vomiting and wouldn't eat. She got sick quick. Deff something to consider if you have generalized swelling

I'm just thinking of things maybe missed by the vet. I have found some vets don't really use their brains and ASSUME alot.

Well and lepto is not common until it is. Usually it's not seen though. I can't remember what the blood work looks like though with lepto. Usually it effects kidney function. If suspected kidney and liver function should be tested.

Yes that then multi organs. I have been now 2x with missed diagnosis from 2 different vets. It's so awesome having this forum to help guide when something is wrong. The experience is so valuable

The only other thread I can think of with leg swelling was this one

Please pray for Jake - Mastiff Forum
Please get this taken care of ASAP, time is not on your side. We were very lucky and were able to get the best care for Jake. He is now after nearly a year just about to come off antibiotics. I pray that what you are going through is nothing like what we went through. It has been a very expensive journey to get him healthy again, but we would do it over again in a heartbeat.

Just an update. Took Ottis to Virginia Tech Animal Hospital this morning.after an hr or so evaluation. They said he needed to be in ICU and needs an ultrasound of the leg. They told me to just go home and they would call me when they ultrasound was done and reviewed. Not more than 30mins after leaving they called and said they found the problem. Said Ottis has an abscess on his thigh muscle. Not sure if it was do to him wrestling and falling last week. They will have to do surgery to fix it. They was not sure if it was a one time thing or if it will recurr later in life. With surgery she said Ottis will make a full recovery. The only down fall is forking out possible $3000 dollars more in top of the $1000 from the first two vet bills. But of course I told them to do what ever was need.I will deal with the bill when that bridge comes. They are not sure if they are going to do the surgery tonight or put him in ICU for the night to get him some fluids and food in him and do the surgery first thing in the morning.

Aw crap...excellent that you got an answer to what is going on, but sucks the bill is so high. Been there and done that and I had to borrow from friends, it is worth it in the end, just know that and go with it.

I hope your boy has many healthy and medically unremarkable years, going forward!

I am guessing you don't have insurance? So glad you have answers! It must be a real nasty infection. Hoping for speedy recovery!

What a blessing that you got an answer, and horrible about the bill. I am so happy to see that you followed through and are getting the right treatment for your pup.

I am so glad you caught it before it burst, that's what's happened to Jake, it was on his joint and it burst and turned the leg septic. The infection after that turned resistant to antibiotics but we think it's gone now. I'm praying that surgery goes well and he has a speedy recovery!
