  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Wish there was more that could be done about byb and puppy mills :-(

There is this intersection in my town that has basically been claimed by this family as a make shift selling post and it drives me insane. Sometimes it is a different group of people and they are selling produce, nuts or other consumables, but the majority of the time it is this same family peddling their puppies.
Every 2-3 weeks they are out there with a sign advertising what puppies they have that week. This week it was Great Dane puppies. Two weeks ago it was Italian Greyhounds, Two weeks before that it was Yorkies. I kid you not, every two weeks it is an entirely different breed of dogs. I have absolutely no idea where they are getting them all from. I see them around town quite frequently, so I highly doubt they live somewhere out in the country with enough room for 26 different breeds of dogs to roam comfortably. I knew it was a bad idea, but I went up and talked to them the other day. I asked them about health testing on their Danes and they said that their neighbor works for a vet and checked them all thoroughly and was there to assist with the birth. I asked why they didn't take them to an actual vet and they went on some rant about how all of the vets here are incompetent and just try to overcharge you and don't actually care about your animals. I asked what vaccinations the puppies had, absolutely zero. They are parading nine 6 week old puppies on a very busy street corner allowing everyone and their damn brother to touch them and the pups hadn't ever had a single shot. Lovely. I asked them about contracts and how to go about applying for a puppy and they actually laughed. They said that they couldn't stand the "Snobby breeders" that make you jump through hoops like you're buying a house rather than a pet. No contract, no warranty and if I wanted a puppy, I just needed to give them cash, money order or cashier's check.
So here's what we have so far. No parents on site, no pictures offered. The puppies have never been checked by a vet and I would say it is safe to assume that the parent's hadn't either. No assurances on the health of the puppy, no checking the future owners. With that, you would think that they would be reasonably priced since you are basically getting the equivalent of store brand 1 ply toilet paper vs super strong quilted charmin. Nope. They were wanting $1,600 per pup. They saw me cringe and said that they would do payment plans at a 10% interest rate. SERIOUSLY!!?!?!?! WHO THE HELL DOES THAT!?!?!?
Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about these people. I did report them for illegally operating a business on privately owned property, but that's about all I can do. I can call animal control, but I don't know where they live so that wouldn't really be helpful.
I just wish there were some laws that would prevent this extreme level of absolute ignorance. They could care less about those puppies, all they saw were the dollar signs. Makes me sick.

2 words: puppy mill.

People like that should be tied to a truck & dragged 50 feet down a bumpy road. Too bad you couldn't ask them about a different breed of puppy so that you might could get their address. I think you did the right thing reporting them. Won't stop them from breeding but will make selling their puppies a lot harder. Those pups are all probably infested with parasites. I didn't get Duchess from the best place but I can say they took the pups to the vet regularly & wormed them regularly. When I took Duchess home she was vaccinated, wormed a few times & had been to the vet I believe once, maybe twice by 8 weeks with her litter mates. While I still think they're a byb, sounds like the people you're referring to are more of what I consider the lowest of the low...aka puppy mills.

So frustrating. I have a friend who manages a petco, she runs adoption events etc. She bought a pet store puppy a few months ago :/ I was so annoyed... granted, she was having personal issues and was in a huge funk and the little white puffball in the window was just what she felt she needed.. but still. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

I would never suggest you do this Laura, but I'd be tempted to follow them home to see where the mill might be.

Ditto! I would call animal control and tell them that you believe they may have a puppy mill due to the different breeds every few weeks. I'm not sure how they work in your area but that's definitely something we would investigate here!

I bet if you told some local rescue groups, they might have a private militia waiting in the wings to take down this kind of operation...
I'd be tempted to follow them home, too...

Report them to the city because I'm sure they should have a business license and pay the business taxes. This will hopefully start the process to shut them down.

I agree, contact animal control, but they probably will not do anything.

Call your local TV station and report them as a concerned citizen.
