Earlier this week Pru (my AmStaff) and I were walking in the woods by ourselves. Pru is a ridiculously social dog and loves people more than she loves life itself.
As we were walking, I had a sensation of vulnerability that I have never had walking Zeek and Lila. Now, I know if someone has ill intent, Zeek's look and size will not stop them, but it cannot be denied that these attributes usually give us a little bit of breathing room and space to move. Zeek also does not like strangers so people aren't getting that close that fast without Zeek having something to say about it.
With Pru, if anyone intends us harm, our best shot at space is the reputation of her breed (assuming the attacker believes the pitbull hype) and our best shot at safety is if I release her to lick and wiggle them while I run away and then call her to me once I am at a safe distance. Ha Ha Ha
I guess I need to start taking a serious look at what I carry with me when Pruie and I walk alone. I'm a little embarrassed to be asking this question, but what personal protection aids/tools do others take with you on your walks in secluded areas?
