Well I am jobless

I really am thrown for a loop here as I have worked at the Snow Summit resort for about 35 years and 21 straight through this last run. Our resorts (BBMR) were purchased by Mammoth mountain Resorts and they fired about 20 of us last Feburary 27 thru the 30th. Then a bunch more this last 2 weeks. Many people that had made a career working for BBMR are not out seeking employment and we are not young people living with limited bills but older adults with loans, credit cards and other depts. Mammoth has no intent to help our community like the previous owners, it is all about cap gain for them and all the revenue will now go into the MMSA coffers instead of being used in the Big Bear Valley.

They gave me a couple grand to get through a couple months and I am still waiting to cash out my stock so I can make it through winter but it's going to be a rough road for me and my pack soon.

Sorry to hear Mike. That really sucks monkey balls! I'm going through some unstable times at work too, but 35 years, now that's dedication.

Geez Mike that sucks big time!
I was in the same boat last year after 26 years of service.
I have been lucky that I was able to retire though I have to wait another 6 months
Or so to tap into my 401k fund.
It does keep me restricted financially though.
I can see what a pickle you are in with the limited work opportunities in your area.
Any chance you could go to the resort in the San Gabriel mountains?
Say the word and I'll drive up the mountain and bring you a big bag of dog food and a bottle of Jack.

Mike, if I hit the Lotto, you and your pack will be on my sweetheart list.

We have had a scare with Jon's job, he's been there for 42 years. I hope if it happens they do the big buy out, but they'll be stupid to let him go. Nobody is indispensable, but he was away for three weeks sick (management threatening) and other staff took pictures of how it fell apart, without him. When I dropped him off at work the other guys stopped and gave him a standing ovation. Sure made him feel good.

Fact is, we'd sue.

Any chance you could take the legal route...rules are different in the States and my husband is union. Just wondering. Also severance here is significant, he'd get a big handshake. You said they gave you a couple of grand...wow, that's peanuts.

Mike, I predict a great opportunity is just waiting around the corner. Breathe and believe!

Yall need to move down to Houston. The job market is crazy. So much better than the rest of the nation. Ten of thousands of jobs. And billions to pay

Mike,

I am so sorry to hear this. I am new here, but have followed your posts. It's sad that a company doesn't value their employees enough to have some regard towards loyalty and longevity? I hope that your stellar history, makes you able to get another great job?

Sorry Mike, the hurt is palpable and I hate that you are going through this right now. What a shitty circumstance.

Mike, I am also truly sorry to hear this news. It just goes to show how these companies are in it for the all mighty dollar and to hell with the people! I sure hope this turns around for you quickly!

Thanks all.

DDSK I'll take that Kibble, venison and the Jack! Every little bit helps.

At least selling the puppies has come at just the right time. I would be tempted if Jade was papered or I had a papered BB I would breed again just to make ends meet. But then I look back and remember how hard it was to go through it and think I would sell blood and organs first.

I have no words of wisdom but certainly feel awful for your situation. If you post up that fb site here, I'll order the collar and lead I talked about a few months ago! I agree with the previous post about hanging in there and having faith, there's something good coming!

Send me a PM with your contact info. And we'll schedule a trip up the hill.

Mike I am sorry about your job loss, I really am.

But for you to imply that those of us with “papered dogs” are coming away with a profit when we breed leads me to believe you really have no idea what real breeders go through.

I just scheduled an appt for health screens on two dogs that will cost me at least $1100+ tax and that is just for hoping they turn out. In the past 6-8 months I am sure I paid car payments for my vets with the visits we have had there with dogs that reside with me and haven*t been bred as well as those that might be prospects. I know my family sure thinks I am nuts most times spending what I do. We have had our own personal stuff that came up with injuries, babies/mat leave, job loss, new company start up, and now a long distance relationship while we continue to move forward. We made each of these decisions without once considering breeding my papered dogs for profit, I would never insult responsible breeders that way.

Oh, Mary, I don't think he was denigrating your skills, commitment - both financial and emotional, your love of the breed or anything, it's was just a head-in-the-hands comment, wistfully spoken, immediately regretted. Everyone knows it isn't for the money...perhaps the studs make some money, but not the bitches. It's cost heavy, emotionally battering, and not for the weak of heart. Mike knows this, he nearly lost his beloved girl. He's just in pain wondering where his next pay cheque is coming from, and the last free money came from Jade's accidental pairing with Odi. I'm sure he wouldn't wish that stress on his worst enemy. I know I wouldn't take a chance with my girl after I heard what he went through. No Way!

I'm so sorry, Mike. I went through this about 10 years ago, a corporation I worked for 12 years with suddenly lost the lease on my store, along with 7 others throughout the country. I'd relocated my family 3 times to accommodate them; had to work on my only day off many times; used my older kids as slave labor....then I was told the store was closing in 8 weeks, & get ready, sucks to be you. It's been a struggle ever since. I love my job now, but it definitely isn't making me rich. Do what you gotta do to survive. I'm thinking about you. I'll have a few bucks next month to order a collar/lead from you. Then I'll post your site to a closed group on facebook that is all about dog gear, especially collars. A woman in this group went on medical from a welding job, started playing with dog tags, & is living off her talent. You never know.

Mike - so sorry to hear you and yours are going through! That really sucks with the amount of time you have worked for them. I'd guess from your statement about the length of time you've worked there you fall into a protected category of workers over a certain age. Age discrimination is enforced strongly in CA (I lived in CA for 20+ years and went through a lay off where that was the case.) If there are several of you over that age and you can prove younger people were given your jobs a class action suit should be a slam dunk. Might be worth talking to an attorney.

Hang in there - you never know when something better might be the result of all this.

Wow some people just like to blow stuff way out of proportion. Still hanging on to old grudges I guess.

Tric, that is really something to consider because most of us that were let go are over 50 and some were even just a couple years away from retirement age.

I'd put a few bucks in your defense fund! Go get 'em, Mike! Do a Go Fund Me, and post the link. Perhaps all of you that were let go can post to all of your on-line forums and build a defense fund! A lot of us here are near retirement and have been tossed away by our former employers. It's emotionally devastating...it took me years to crawl up out of the hole my employers dug for me, and, truth to tell, I've never hit stride again. The only saving grace was a month's pay for every year I worked, oh, and my stocks. That's all long gone now, but it was wrong...dead wrong...short sighted and WRONG. There's still some fight in this bitch so sign me up!
