Hello guys, needing advice on how to train my ddb to toilet outside, we put paper down and sometimes he uses it (most times) sometimes he doesnt, hes getting to big and older now and shouldnt be doing it on paper, whats the best way to learn him to go outside? or bark so we can let him out?
Here is a photo of him on xmas day waiting for his doggy mince pie :) NWP_121225_0094.jpg

Many people use bells hanging from the door. That they teach the dog to ring to alert you that they need to go out. As for training to go outside the first step is to remove the paper when you are home and take him outside to do his business. Anytime he wakes up, eats, drinks, plays you take him outside and wait until he goes. I always had mine on leash until they went and then took the leash off so that they could play afterwards. When he goes outside praise like he's the smartest doggy in the world. If you catch him going inside startle him to get him to stop and immediately take him out to finish and praise if he does. If he goes inside but you don't see him don't say anything. I put them where they couldn't see me clean it up because I was warned by other owners that some dogs might see your cleaning it up as a reason to re-scent that area.

Take him out every time he eats and tell him it's time to go potty or whatever you want to call it. Titan knows when I say, "let's go potty", it's time to go to the bathroom outside. I've trained all my dogs to go potty after they eat. As puppies, they need to go out every couple of hours.

If he's trained to go on the paper, have some paper outside for him too.

We start our puppies at 5 weeks with newspaper. And keep the bedding clean so they never have to sleep in their waste.

If you aren't already feeding on a set schedule, then do so. It helps keep the puppy regular too.

Our rule of thumb is 1/2 hour after each meal. We tell them 'Go potty."

Outside is not playtime. So, after they potty we praise them and bring them back inside. If they don't potty within say 10 minutes, we bring them back inside anyways and try again in 45 minutes.

Also, we give potty breaks during playtime, and at least every 2 hours when they are 8-12 weeks. After 16 weeks we lengthen it to every 4 hours.

And we always make a huge deal when they go outside - plenty of praise, maybe a treat, or a toy.

Accidents happen, and if I find them after the fact I just clean them up. If I catch the pup in the act, I just say NO! and take them outside quickly. If they finish outside I then praise, praise, praise. Spanking never helps, nor does rubbing their nose in it - then you just end up with 'sneak-a-leak'.

Some dogs get it faster than others. Consistency is key. We have a routine we follow daily.
