Shedding like crazy...Black hair hair everywhere

That sounds like what happened with Kryten. I choose topical treatment and we think that is what lead to his lick granulomas, so the injectable was probably a good call.

I‘m sorry to hear that. Those decions are really tough to make. I think about from my perspective. What would I want if I had to take certain medication. It‘s probably not comparable and somewhat unreasonable, but it helps me with the decision making process. The injection was more expensive, but not significantly.

His shedding/hair loss is getting better. However, he still seems to be itchy (scratching his sides). We have eliminated all poultry from any of his food for now (not sure if at all related, but we will give it a try). Does anybody have experience with bacteria infections? How long would the recovery take? He received an antibiotic injection a week ago, and had a bath with special shampoo, as well. I‘m just trying to figure out if there is anything else in addition to the infection that was diagnosed.

Gus still bites at his skin on his legs, I know he doesn’t have any fleas or ticks. I really think it is where he is growing so fast. When Georgia had her skin issue she smelled like Fritos of Doritos.

The oral antibiotics that Kryten is on are for 3 weeks. I think the main problem is that it is a normal bacteria that just got out of control. From what I was told the underlining issue needs to be addressed to ensure healing and if it is dietary it can take 6 weeks to see results from a food change.

Thank you all. I called the vet and she recommended to give him benadryl for a week or so. She doesn‘t believe that the infection is still causing the itching (hair loss is better). Do you have any experience? Because of his weight, she recommends four pills twice a day (25mg). I have never given any "human meds" to a dog. The lady at the pharmacy said that eight a day was a lot. He‘s 175lbs. According to the vet, 4x2 a day is the dosage for dogs over 100lbs.

I use a shedding blade and a pumice block made for hair removal, as well as a rubber curry comb. All from the horse section of Tractor Supply Company. I also have a furminator and I do like it, but I like the other options better for us.

What pumice block do you use? I’ve tried looking it up and all I see are ones made to use on furniture and rugs. Or is that what you use it for?

Did you figure out the ratio Tyler, I didn't know so I didn't comment. Is Bane doing better?

Thanks for asking. It seems that the common dosage is 1mg of Benadryl per 1lbs of body weight (not more than 2-3 times a day). The vet asked us to give him four tablets twice a day, which would be 100mg of Benadryl each (one tablet contains 25mg). Based on this calculation, he‘s on the dosage of a 100lbs dog, but I‘m not willing to give him 10+ tablets a day. Based on his weight of 175+, he could probably take seven twice a day, which I think is way too much. I tried them myself, and two after a day at work made me a little tired (I know you can‘t really compare humans and dogs accurately).
He‘s doing better. His skin is still a little itchy but nothing crazy. The shedding has decreased, but it‘s still noticeable, which is probably normal for the breed.

Sorry for the late update on this. Everything is back to normal. Some shedding, but not excessive, and no more bald spots. It might have been an allergic reaction to something in the environment, but I do believe that adding hiqh quality salmon oil has helped a lot.

So glad it cleared up. Logan had a couple of bald spots on his head appear after we moved. The fur is growing back in now. He was having a blow out at the time. But it could be anything..stress, allergies, food, bug bites .I just kept an eye on it. I'll also look into the salmon oil. Thanks for the update and info. :)

My vet has prescribed human meds for my larger animals for years....when she can. She first told me that they tested the drugs on dogs before humans.....that was true back in the day....not sure if they still do..... I do know when my lab would get her hot spots it drove us all crazy....poor old girl....I would give her oatmeal baths. No soap what so ever....I would put the oatmeal or 1 minute oat cereal in a stocking.... and would use that to rub her down....she loved it....and it would release the itching too. After using that the first time I never used soap in her again
