Raw feeding

So, if I understand right raw feeding is quite easy. At least four different types of meat. Eggs, organ meat and fish are to be feed occasionally. Nothing I have seen said how much, how many times a day for my 5 month Neo. And can he still eat sweet potatoes? For some reason he loves them -_-

The pup should 2-3% of expected weight. Titan weighs about 130 so I feed him 2 lbs per day.

You then feed them 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ meat.

Organ meat should be introduced slowly after 2-3 weeks of the raw diet. Slowly introduce all new meats. It's best to start out with chicken leg quarters.

You can feed your pup sweet potato if you want to. I feed Titan sweet potato and carrots.

5 month old should be feed 3 times a day.

You can break it into as many meals as you wish. We feed based on a weight ratio and feed (2) times a day but you have a pup.. the more meals the better.

Dang! That like three chicken thighs a day already. Any ideas on cheaper cuts? Cheapest I could get was 3$ a pound for pork spareribs :(

Where do you live in TX? Do you have Savers Costplus or Fiesta Mart? I buy Titan's meat there. $1.48 per lb for pork chops. They sometimes have chicken gizzards and chicken livers for .66 a lb.

Sorry, I don't shop at any of those. Watch ads and stock up when they run specials. Should be able to get a couple of turkeys pretty cheap next week.

Remember to keep your bone to meat ratio at around 10% bone. Chicken necks are mostly bone as are wings. I buy whole fryers for .99 a pound and half breasts with bone on it for 1.29 per lb. Pork shoulder can get as low as 1.50 here. I feed liver in a ground beef sweet potato mash I make every other week. Regular potatoes are nightshades and should be avoided.

Yes, on the chicken necks. I wouldn't think that is a good price on the ribs. Have you checked the price on 10 pounds bags of chicken leg quarters? In Houston we can get them for .59 and on sale for .39.

Also poultry (chicken & turkey, especially) and lots of pork cuts are often enhanced with salt solutions... so check the sodium content. You want <100mg per 4oz serving. If you get the "enhanced, guaranteed juicy" varieties with lots of salt, you can cause digestive upset (i.e. runny poops).

My average is $2/lb... that's a mix of pork ($1.90) and beef ($3) along with whole sardines ($1.80) and mutton ($1.80). I joined a rawfeeding bulk buying group, which is AWESOME for finding great deals. You guys in Texas have much better deals at the store that I do.

And you do NEED organ meats for essential vitamins (but - eventually... wait a few weeks before introducing, to avoid runny poops)... in small quantities, to total ~10% of the overall diet over time.

I agree raw feeding is easy - once you have your system down. It took me a few months to get a system going... and also get Denna's system going. She now can eat pretty much anything I put in front of her (and will try anything... including citrus and hot peppers... dummy). My freezer is now stocked with mutton (bone-in), venison (boneless), beef ribs, bison kidney and lamb liver... and a few chickens and turkeys. I pull stuff out of the freezer weekly in a large 80/10/10 portion (~20lbs worth), then divvy up meals daily. ~1.5 lbs for breakfast (1lb boneless meat, 2oz liver, 2oz kidney, 2oz green tripe) and ~1.5lbs for dinner (1lb boneless meat, 0.5lb bone-in meat).

You probably want to stick with smaller more frequent meals with your puppy until he's ~1 year old.

Denna also loves all veggies, so in addition to a few eggs a week, she also occasionally gets sweet potatoes, broccoli stems, squash ends, carrots, etc... but absolutely NO onions (they're toxic).

Be sure to check out the "getting started" files... I know Deb and some others have posted some great links to complete "instructions" on how to get started with minimal excitement (i.e. runny poops and/or constipation issues). :)

I agree with Tina to watch the sodium content but sometimes you have no other choice. I do not check the pork chops I buy for Titan because they do not have the sodium content listed and he does fine with them, no diarrhea. :)

It's like the food we eat, it is true that organic is best but sometimes you can't buy organic due to a family budget. It's better to eat fruit and vegetables regardless if they are organic or not. I wash all my fruits and vegs with a water/vinegar/baking soda/lemon juice mixture.

You do what you are able to do. That's my motto...

Yes, I feed Titan fish, ground beef and occasional ground turkey because he's not too fond of ground turkey. Marrow bones are ok as long as they are bigger than the pups mouth. Do not feed weight bearing bones, i.e. leg bones, they will break the pup's teeth.
