Question for Breeders

As a breeder of any kind, when your pups are of age that visitors are okay to have, would you allow someone who is buying your puppies to come visit them? If you said your going to be there at a specific time, would you be there? I have this huge issue and wondered if I'm just a picky/pushy/wanna be there type buyer but I figure if I'm spending all this money, shouldn't I be able to see my puppy when we agree and don't I have a right to be pissed when you bail all the flippin time?????
Any help from any of you breeders would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you

If I tell you it is fine and I am going to be there then I will be there (I have been on the flip side when puppy people flake) so I wouldn't do so without calling someone with a valid reason and rescheduling another time that works for them. Something to be aware of is some breeders won't let you come in advance if you travel in areas that are high traffic with other dogs(not saying this is the case) but I do know that Rottie are prone to parvo so I know a couple breeders that won't let anyone comes into their home to see a puppy until 7 weeks, after their first needle.

Is there some reason they might be hiding things if they keep bailing? Are they sending you pics of the puppies? Have you been to their house? Is there something they are trying to hide there in the way of conditions the puppies/adults are being kept in?

Mary,

I'm not sure she is hiding anything but oh gosh this is a long story! Okay, she had 2 females being bred and I chose to go with 1 female but the other was due first. When the first mom had her babies, she text me in the middle of the night telling me they were being born, pics of them, everything! I was excited for her cuz it's always awesome to see puppies being born :) She invited us over that day to see the puppies and we went a few more times before the bitch we chose was due to have her puppies.
I was there for the confirmation of the bitch being pregnant and the day she took her into the vet to have her c-section, we went. She only ended up having a singleton pup and it was a male reverse brindle, just what I had paid a good deposit for. Well then she ended up deciding to keep him and give me a pup from the other litter that was already born. Okay fine, so I choose the male I wanted from her because there was only 2 males and 1 female.
We have seen him almost every week until recently and I haven't seen him for almost 2 weeks now and tomorrow he will be 6wks old. We can't bring him home until July 7th because we are going out of town and she agreed to keep him for us until then but it seems as if every time I ask to see him, she agrees and then something comes up at the last minute or she forgot and she's not there.
My husband hasn't even got to see him at all and every time I try to set that up she bails on us! We live within 10 miles of her so I'm not sure why it is so hard for her to allow us to come see him!?!
Anyways, I am just frustrated, it would be nice if we could set up 1 day a week to go see him but we can't even do that, guess I have learned my lesson!!

So did you pay a deposit before pups were born? Personally I like to wait to pay a deposit until after pups or born since mother nature has a tendancy to be unpredictable at times.

In either case it sounds like a situation I went through when thought I found the right breeder. I just know that if I didn't feel comfortable with the breeder I'd look elsewhere, trust is nothing to take likely. Hopefully there is a reasonable explaination as to what's going on. Keep us posted.

Yes, I paid a just about half for the deposit and I know this lady has a lot going on but if it were me, I would not say I'm going to be here for someone (to come see a pup they are purchasing for a lot of money from me) and then not be there or text with an excuse each and every time. I know her singleton died last week and she is heart broke and it's not something you just get over but at the same time, you have 3 other puppies who need you just as much, ya know!
Maybe I'm just pushy and want to see him instead of getting pictures of him. I figure if I live that close and not out of state, I should be able to visit at least once a week, I don't think I'm asking that much, am I ???

Our breeder did not allow us into the house but she did bring the pup out to us. She also made us spray our hands and shoes with disinfectant. I was suspicious as to why we were not allowed in. The other problem is she had a house full of Filas. However, we did go back a couple times when she didn't have pups and we went into the house. So, it really could be for the safety of the pups.

Living so close I do think you should be allowed to visit the pup at least once a week.

Hmm..that is strange especially since you live so close and are able to see them in person. Both times inquired about a pup I was not able to do so. My first breeder I chose did this to me and kept offering a pup from a different litters. I was contacted when pups were born but after than never heard anything until 5/6 weeks but it was a pup from a different litters. Later when speaking with another breeder I was informed that the same situation occurred numerous times with different people, including the breeder I spoke with. Like I said it could be nothing, maybe they are busy. Don't think you are pushy buyer, I believe its normal to be excited about a new family member. Hope things work out.

Heck, I would love to be able to sit outside and have her bring him out for us to see, I've even asked her to do that but for some reason, that doesn't even work :( I know she is currently in a different living situation (living with her parents) and that is why I suggested we see him outside but her mom doesn't seem to mind us visiting the pups so I'm not sure what the deal is! I've even asked her to bring him here, we have no other pets or anything that would cause him to get sick!
Who knows, maybe I'm just over reacting and blowing this out of proportions, I just can't wait to get him home and then things will be better :)

Just a guess...could she have accepted more deposits than she has pups to sell, banking that the other girls would have a few pups and now she is avoiding you? I hope you and the breeder have a signed deposit agreement in place...

Jennifer,

:) We definitely have a signed agreement in place! She did bank on having more pups than she did but she chose to take the singleton pup and he died. I was afraid she was going to take back the one we are getting but she said she isnt going too. I guess if it happens, I will look elsewhere and it wasn't meant to be :( I'm just praying the pups are fine and everything will work out the way it's suppose to!!

I don't think you're being unreasonable, and I'd be getting upset if I had a deposit down on a pup and the breeder was flaking on appointments.

I've personally have only bought one dog locally, my heart dog Bentley. Ironically his breeders ended up living only a few mere blocks from me. I know that I drove them crazy - I was over there ALL the time, but they never said anything to me. I wanted a male, and he was the only one in the litter. I got to seem him when he was 2 days old, and probably twice a week up until I brought him home. It got to where the sire and dam would just let me walk in the house, no barking or anything...which I think kinda irked the husband.

I am so glad you got to see him. I hope thing really work out for you. I don't think wanting a weekly visit is unreasonable. I have bought from a couple of breeders and have always insisted on this point. I feel like it is my baby and who wouldn't want to check in on their baby? Both breeders were absolutely fine with this. Shoe stayed outside and hands must be washed. I think this also helped the babies learn my voice and smell for an easier transition. I know you will enjoy this sweet baby for years

I think I might be in this situation right now. My breeder cut off communication with me so I have now asked for my deposit back as I no longer feel comfortable dealing with her. Hopefully she complies and I can leave it at that and move on to finding a puppy from else where.

Ouch... sorry to hear that. Did you sign a contract that said they could transfer to the next litter or that they would refund if what you wanted wasn't available?

Ravendarat, I hope she complies as well good luck you. This is why I am paranoid about sending money I notice some people tend to "change" after recieving said funds............
