Purebred or mixed breed?

So I joined a facebook group with all our bullmastiff lovers yesterday. (I think some of you may already be in the group) I posted my first picture of Dante addressing the weight concerns I have for them. Most people think that Dante is a mixed breed not a purebred bullmastiff. Some of them say he's got a little boxer in him, some say pitbull. I don't know. The discussion went on and we found out that the breeder I bought him from, is actually a BYB/puppy mill that even stole BM pictures from other reputable breeders and put on their website claiming they're their dogs. I was very disappointed (in the breeder, not in Dante, of course). I thought I'd purchased a purebred BM but ended up with a mixed breed? I don't care what Dante is, though. We love him to death and we have been and will continue to give him the best he deserves. However I am a little concerned with his DNA. We've originally wanted a BM because they're supposedly very laid back and does not have high energy since we've already gotten a hyperactive golden retriever. Now if Dante's gotten boxer in him then he's gonna end up being possibly even more active than our golden. I just want to know what I should expect in the future in terms of his health and energy level. (We will end up doing a DNA test in the near future). Breeder said that white on the face is a colour flaw/fault, and they claim that Dante is a purebred. What do you guys think? (Dante is a little bit below average on his weight, currently 40 lbs at 4 months old. He's on the lean side, having longer hind legs than the front. He's also got a white strip on the nose, and white chin connecting the white chest.)

Dante is definitely a good looking boy. Sorry you've been mucked around by the breeder. It is true they can have a white chest patch and it is a fault but they are usually small. Our BM boy has a small white patch. He was 57lb at 4 mth but they vary so much, depending on genetics. Some other BM pups on here were so much bigger than Ottis at the same age. They should be kept lean to protect their joints so try not to compare with other people's growth charts. He looks just right to me. Unfortunately the only way to guarantee a purebred is to buy a pedigree pup. This is Ottis at 4 mth so you can see he too was lean, now he is about 65kg at 3 years. See his white patch. Personality varies too within the breed. We also have a 17mth BM bitch Milo. She is a little girl. Not sure of her weight at 4mth but wouldn't have been much. Ottis is much more energetic than Milo. He is more playful and on for a game while Milo is a true couch potato. Sounds like you love Dante to bits and once he knows the boundaries of what he is allowed to do he will adapt just fine. The key thing is to let them be with you as much as possible. They really are family members and boredom is usually the catalyst for naughty behaviour.

I would say Dante is a mixed BM, maybe with boxer. You are right, boxers are very high energy. Is Dante high energy now? Regardless of his breed and I'm sorry you were duped by the breeder, Dante is your family member and he's adorable. I hate deceptive breeders and especially BYB's. :(

You should post this information re: this breeder on Facebook and yelp.com so others will not be duped by this person. I'm sure this breeder this gives 2 sh*ts about the pups and it's all about the $$.

I recommend Wisdom Panel doggie DNA test. I've used it on three of my dogs. I rescued my mastiff mix. I had no idea what that tiny dog was and didn't care. Because she was brindle, I thought she was a pit mix. As she grew, I realized she wasn't a pit. So at 5 months I did her DNA test and found out my girl was full blooded mastiff crossed with full blooded bullmastiff. It's worth it to see what Dante might have in his lineage. Regardless, he's adorable and beautiful. It might give you some peace of mind.

We got our first dog (the black one), she was advertised as a mastiff, we got her anyway realizing she wasn't. She is our basket case but we love her anyway. We got Duke our Mastiff recently, he was from a friend that had 2 unintended litters.

Jack is from an unintended litter as well, as his mom is very young. Well, i didn't mind about him being pure breed or mix, he's just our baby - and as long as his parents are corso, i can only suppose he's a corso as well :))

He is a mix but he is cuter then a baby on valentines day. BYB do this type of thing. the truth is most people breed from their home but their is a difference as stated before. Pedigree and lineage is different then saying the dogs are papered. and anyone with pedigree dogs will be exhibting them at shows , health testing, and provide genetic testing to prove the lineage of dam and sire, and will likely give you a hard time trying to purchase one of their dogs in all honesty. i had several meetings with my breeder and several phone calls before i took a puppy home .with months of waiting for the proper breeding.

It is unfortunate you got Duped but the puppy is just adorable. you can also report them to several different sites that will list them as scam artist's. you can also take them to small claims for a judgement. People like that should not be involved in breeding dogs. the truth is the Breeder may even actually believe their dogs are Purebred.I would take some sort of action though just to make it difficult for them to continue their practice.Love that guys all day long though he looks adorable.
