Opinions on Cropping Puppies Ears.

I was just hoping to get some opinions on ear cropping. I recently rescued my Cane Corso puppy, but it has been my dream dog for a while. I personally like the look of cropped ears, but I am just having trouble deciding with him. I see different ear crop lengths, and I keep worrying that I might get it done to him and it won't be like I expected. My vet crops ears around 10 weeks, so I have a little time to decide. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

It is completely a personal decision. There are many for and against it. There are as many reasons to do it as not to do it.
I love the look of a well cropped Cane Corso yet I also like the floppy eared look as well.
If done right the cropped ears look great, but when botched they look horrible.
I chose not to crop my dogs ears and at times I wish I did only from an esthetic point of view.
My son rescued a CC that has a poor ear crop, too small and it looks funky but has not hindered her at all.
If you like it feel free to do it, you will have some people hating on you but here you will have as many that understand.

I too think it's just a personal decision you have to make for yourself. We've always owned cropped CCs (all but one were rescued as adults though, so they were already cropped), so at this point, that's just what I'm used to. There might be a few minor health benefits, but I think it's primarily about esthetics and what has been traditional in the breed. I will say that a few months ago, my mutt ripped his ear while they were wrestling and my pit bull was having a flare up of her ear margin vasculitis. So they were bleeding everywhere, and one had to wear an e collar and the other had to wear a snood......and I've never been so grateful for Rhaegar's cropped ears!

Definitely a personal decision. I love the look of cropped ears on certain breeds. Coral being one of them and the Great Dane is the other. I planned on getting my Dane done when I got him at 8 weeks but he had other stuff going on and by the time I got it figured out it was too late. I love the cropped look but he is super cute with his floppy ears, too.

I support whatever you choose but those floppy ears are adorable. And I love my girls floppy ears even though I have to clean them a ton.

I think it is harsh but my boys are circumcised so I suppose it is the same type of thing. HEHE
Most people crop the Danes but I actually prefer the natural ears. I am so glad Bears ears are natural. They are the biggest, floppiest, softest ears and I play with them constantly. People always comment on how soft his ears are! With the CC I actually prefer the look of the natural ears vs crop. To me the cropped ears look like little horns. It almost reminds me of a Boston terrier head where the floppy ears looks more mastiff to me. Obviously this is just my personal preference! Either way a CC is a gorgeous dog. I was strongly considering them but was not ready to go that route yet! One day I would love to have one when the time is right.

i love Jack's expression with "piggy ears" when he doesn't get it lol... I would not crop my dogs ears.

I'd be one of those people! But I'll try and hate on it in the nicest way possible lol. For me when you're already admitting it's purely aesthetic that should be it right there. Your putting a very young pup under anesthesia, which can be very dangerous, and having surgery performed simply because you prefer a look. And as mentioned before there are soooo many people out there that either don't like the shape they came out in, one ear stands and the other doesn't, or it just completely gets botched and your dog's head looks like a burn victim. If you're already on the fence that means you also like the floppy ear look, so keep it they're adorable and make a wonderful flapping sound when they shake their heads.
Karen I get what your saying but last time I checked babies don't have to go under anesthesia to get circumcised, I'd way more compare it to getting a nose job on an infant because you like the way certain noses look.
Unless you are using this dog to protect property from predators it is completely an antiquated procedure, if we just kept doing things out of tradition slavery would still be legal, some things need to be put in the past and left there.
All that said, I prefer the way cropped ears look, just wasn't willing to risk my dogs lives to get them.
All of this is my opinion and is in no way meant to offend anyone. This is YOUR dog and YOUR decision and wish you the best of luck no matter what you decide!

Personal opinion. Just make sure you see the vet's work on previous dogs before you have him/her do it. I was at training with Moose the other day (his ears are cropped) and there were two other Cane's w their ears not cropped. They are so big and floppy. I'm glad with the choice I made. The dog on the AKC and the ICCF certificate's has it's ears cropped.

I would ask your vet if they have a portfolio, or photo examples of ears they have cropped in the past. Also take in pictures of what you like and what you don't like so your vet is on the same page. We went back and forth on Enzo's ears (I wanted them cropped, my boyfriend didn't) and we ultimately chose to have them done at the breeders vet. I love how they look and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I did feel a little bit bad after the first time I saw him after the surgery but he never once seemed bothered by them.

I am not against floppy ears at all, both my pittys have floppy ears and I love them. Just a personal decision. Your girl is super cute!

I was anti-crop, and ended up rescuing a Doberman that already had cropped ears and getting a show Dane puppy from a breeder who required cropped ears. I was surprised by a couple things:
1) The ears are sooooo much more expressive then I would have thought. Granted, a Dane crop is much longer than a cc crop, but our doberman has a shorter crop and they are still very expressive, probably more so than the Dane.
2) The cropped ears really didn't seem to bother our puppy at all. By the time we got him (a couple days after the crop) he was no longer on paid meds, only antiobiotics, and was active and playing with his siblings. When the scabs started formally, his ears were a bit itchy, but applying bag balm or neosporan to the edges helped with that. He did hate having the tape pulled off his ears once we started posting, but I don't think people usually post cc ears.
3) If it was my choice, I wouldn't crop a puppy due to the expense/time needed to maintain (again, based on my experience with a Dane show crop), but wouldn't hesitate to get a puppy for a reputable breeder who required cropping. I love the look, but don't personally feel its necessary.

I love playing with my dogs' ears... which I suppose you could do with short ones, but there's more to love with long, floppy ones. :)

Denna does have one goopy ear, and I do wonder if a crop would have helped it stay cleaner... but... I think there's more to her issue than just air flow, since the other ear is completely fine...

I love the cropped look on some dogs, too, but I'll probably never elect to do it to my own dog... posting ears sounds like work. HA!

LOL you are funny PrinceLorde! But I love Zoe's floppy ears...they are the softest, most kissable part of her cute self! And when she shakes her head, it's the cutest sound, however it wakes you from your sleep! I love her ears but a cropped ear is a bit more striking look wise!

When I get a Great Dane in the future I plan to crop its ears. In most lines I don't like the natural ear set and a bad ear can be corrected by cropping. Also my floppy ear dogs have ear problems, one dog gets regular ear infections because water gets trapped. Also ears BLEED when cut and they are hard to heal because every head shake can break the cuts open. That said I do love the ears on both dogs and neither would look right without floppy ears.
