SHARON CENTER, Ohio -- A labor of love for a new mother of 20 who delivered an abnormally large litter of dogs on Monday.
"I started writing a detailed list of when they came out," said Christi Six. She owns the Italian Mastiff, or Cane Corso, that gave birth to the puppies. "It started at 5:50 was the first one and the last one was born at 12:45 in the afternoon and he was number 20."
Christi expected less than 10 puppies from her beloved dog Sweetpea. "When the twentieth one came out and all 20 of them were just squeaking and going at it and everything else, I just couldn't believe that."
This is rare, according to Christi's vet who says a dozen dogs would be more than average from the mom who is very protective of her pups. "I'm the only one who can put my hand in here without her deciding that she's going to rip your arm off," said Christi.
Three of the puppies did not survive the first few days, but the rest are thriving on a rotating feeding schedule. Christi keeps track of their meals with the help of a chart and color-coded bands around their necks.
The dogs average two-pounds each right now, but they'll be upwards of 100 pounds when they're fully grown. Christi already has four other dogs, but she does plan on keeping at least one of the puppies.
