Kryten loves people but you wouldn't know that by the racket he can make when someone is approaching the yard. His size, colour and bark (deep and loud) all give an impression of ferocity that is very rarely seen. I can think of 3x (at home)in which I've thought he truly meant for them to stay away or in one case get out.
Since you did have Filas you might already be one step up in having trained neighbors that your dog isnt friendly and shouldn't be approached.

Oh, and congratulations on your new puppy. Enjoy Him or Her. Now I want another. Wife is not onboard with my views though.

That is exactly what I'm hoping for. We are getting a dark brindle. Most people don't even know the difference between a Flia and a mastiff. :) I have already lied and told the neighbors on each side of me that we have another one coming that is from lines that are even meaner than Cane.

So I'm always on tapatalk now(since October) and don't get over to the chitchat forum so I'm very very late on this one;) I just have to add that my male intact EM was the sweetest baby ever! Seriously! Not dog aggressive(even other large intact males) and most certainly not PA. That being said he turned on a switch I never knew he had on his own. That is what made me a true lover of the EM breed. I'm sure Justice will be the perfect dog, he already is!

I think it is in the mastiff nature to be alert and weary of people initially. Even Bear the Dane who is very people friendly will bark with hackles up if he sees someone near the property he does not recognize. If someone pulls up and we welcome them he welcomes them as well. If they are walking down the street however and we are not interacting with them he will cause a fuss. I think socializing is key so the dogs know what to expect from people. Having people come over and showing the dog how we react to guests vs. strangers is important. Teaching bark is easy enough especially since a pup is prone to bark while playing. You just need to capture the behavior. Every dog I have owned has barked at people approaching the home. I never did any type of training, they just naturally want to alert of change. Even my springer spaniel would put up a good show if someone was wandering around outside. Actually the only dogs that I know that don't bark when people come to the house are pits!

Oh, and I would pay close attention to the temperament of the parents. You may want to look for lines that are friendly but protective of the property. You will want very confident parents.
