Hey all, glad to be here :) Here is Kirra, my 14 week old TM. I have had her for 4 weeks now, and I am so glad to have her! She has enriched my family's life dramatically.

Hi, welcome to the forum. She's very cute. Are you in the UK, US....?
We have 2 boys, 19 months and 8 months...they grow up sooooo quickly!

Thanks for the welcome :) I'm in Australia. Tell me about your boys - I'd love to see pictures of them if you have them :) Kirra is so laid back, although she can be very playful and cheeky too :). She is already showing her guarding instincts, with a ferocious sounding bark when she thinks she needs to! She is responding very well to training, however I can see the 'selective hearing' people talk about in her hehe. She's just a joy, and I've had so much fun learning about her.

A couple of recent pictures of my boys....

The B&T is Zeus, 19 months, and the Gold is Hades, nearly 8 months.
Zeus is going through his bratty teenager stage (sigh) and Hades is just an idiot at the moment!
They both are pretty guardy in the house and no-one is approaching our drive without us knowing about it :)
Hades is not too keen on strangers but he is getting better. I dont think he'll ever like being fussed but he's getting a little more tolerant.
And yes, 'selective hearing' is one way of putting it....my husband seriously wondered if Zeus was deaf about a week after we'd brought him home.....no, just ignorant! :D

Thanks! I got her from a breeder in NSW, called Jangbu Tibetan Mastiffs.

Looby your dogs are beautiful! I look forward to hearing all about them :)

It's nice to meet everyone, thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks Ruth, are you in Australia too? It's good to have confirmation as I had read how important it is to go to a reputable breeder.
I have a couple of questions for everyone as well! Does anyone have experience with TM's and chickens? I am trying to train Kirra that our chickens are not toys, as she loves to catch them and use them as chew toys. So far we pretty much have to keep them separated, however ideally I would like for our chickens to free range, and know they are safe. I have tried to train her with them, and am happy to keep repeating the training, however any tips or tricks would be much appreciated!! Also, is it usual for them to still occasionally urinate in the house at this age? I know that she is toilet trained and knows to go outside, and most of the time she does, but I think sometimes she 'chooses' not to haha. I just want to make sure this is normal for the breed/age, and not a bladder issue.

I'm not (I'm in the USA), but her name has come up conversation and what I've heard of her is good!

I don't personally have any experience with TMs and chickens (well, Apollo's SEEN chickens, but thats not the same thing). I'd suggest poking around resources for working Livestock Guardian Dogs owners and see whats suggested.

Off the top of my head Apollo still had occasional accidents till he was at least 16-18 weeks (I didn't exactly write it down). The large majority of them were the result of one of two things:
1: his signal that he needed to go out was to sit silently at the front door, and he'd frequently not do so till he HAD TO GO, so if we didn't notice him asking right away he'd have an accident
2: if he got overly excited about something he'd almost always "forget" to ask to go out. For example we had our inlaws bring over their dogs for socialization, and he'd frequently seem to 'forget" that he was supposed to ask and just find a handy corner to go in so he could get back to interacting with the other dog.

Thanks Ruth, I'll do that! I hadn't thought to look that up - doh! Haha those exact two situations are with Kirra also. At first I just wasn't reading her signals correctly, so more than 50% of her accidents I had to acknowledge as my fault, and sometimes I am sure she just gets distracted! Sometimes she gets so distracted she can pretty much 'wee-walk'. This was the thing I just needed reassurance on :)

She is super cute.

My female TM pup had housebreaking issues at that age. I took her to the vet and she had a UTI. Antibiotics fixed her right up. :)
