Maybe a boerbeol?

Phone pics 243.jpgPhone pics 244.jpgPhone pics 317.jpgPhone pics 394.jpgPhone pics 427.jpgMeet Dozer. We adopted Dozer in 2009 off of Pet Finder. At the time, we were told he was a bullmastiff/boxer mix and believed that to be the case his entire life. However, we recently learned about the Boerbeol breed and I'm wondering if maybe we had a boerbeol or a beorbeol/boxer mix instead! (Sorry, I can't seem to find the right way to shift enter and create a new paragraph, so bear with me). When we got Dozer, he was somewhere between 5-8 years old and a total love. You could tell whoever had him as a baby loved and trained him well, but we could also tell that his owner died or gave him up and he suffered for awhile. He came to us with scarred elbows, skin conditions, and a ruptured and scarred over ACL. The rescue told us he had hip dysplasia, but a visit to the vet sure set us straight. We knew we couldn't afford surgery and if we gave him back to the shelter, he might never be adopted, so we kept him. That was the best decision ever because he was the best dog ever! When we got him he was 95 pounds; all skin and bones. We got him to a very healthy 120 pounds and he stayed there until his death last month. He ruptured his ACL again (we knew the day would come) and in order to help reduce the swelling the vet gave him Deramax, which we later learned can be fatal in a small percentage of dogs. Looking at the pictures and descriptions of the boerbeols here, I'm thinking he may not have been a bullmastiff at all. Although he didn't weigh as much as some of the dogs mentioned here, he had the same look; the deep chest, black mask, and tighter muzzle than some of your other mastiff breeds. He was always unfailingly polite to visiters to our home, but was happiest with his family. He rarely barked. The only time he "went after" anyone was a couple of times when some young teenage boys went running past him. I think they made him nervous. He never fought with other dogs, but wouldn't cow-tow to them, either. People were so impressed by Dozer; when we took him to the Independence Day parade, people would actually leave the parade to come and meet him. I miss the dog so much! So, I know it's too late to do any blood tests or anything, but I was wondering if anyone on these forums have an opinion, or can give me another other information to help me determine if Dozer (Big Daddy Doze, Dozimo, Doze-man... you get the idea) was a bullmastiff or boerbeol, and if you think there was any boxer mixed in? Part of why I'm asking is that we loved Dozer's look and temperament/behavior so much that we're hoping to find another dog like him, and we recently saw a boerbeol on PetFinder, which is what made us aware of the breed. That dog looks a LOT like Dozer. Thanks so much!

If he was a boerboel he would have a totally different look, most boerboel's don't come in that colour, have a different shaped head, eyes, build, this dog doesn't look like a boerboel. He doesn't weigh enough to be a Boerboel although some are on the smaller side at 120 - 140

Yes, that boy does look a lot like Dozer. Dozer almost never barked, but aren't rotts big barkers? How about Boerbeols and Bull mastiffs? The dog that we're looking at on Petfinder is a lot smaller in the chest than Dozer was, so I'm thinking it is mixed with a lab or something "thinner"...

I have owned rotties for over 20 yrs and none of mine were big barkers. Of course they would bark if someone pulled in the driveway and they didn't recognize them. Or if someone knocked on the door of course

Boerboel's average at 150lb + for males. Rottweiler's aren't big barkers, it depends on the individual dog, your dog may have gone through abuse, and you don't know it, he could be just reserved towards everyone around. A rottweiler is 90 - 120lbs, a bullmastiff male 110-133 lbs so that tells you about his weight, i'm 100% sure he is that mix, he has the tough look of both breeds, and the shorter muzzle of the bull, but the influence of the rott in him is great.

Genetics matter too, i have seen some Boerboel's that don't have the muscle mass that some do, on a rescue site, you have to build it, they may not have gotten attention and the exercise to build that muscle. Go on Detroitdogrescue.org, look at the bordeaux they have there, small, his chest isn't as great as others, tells you about their past. At 120 lbs, i don't see him having any lab.

I see quite a few features that look like my dog Barron. He is a Rottweiler Mastiff cross. He has the same coloring and broad chest you are talking about. You can take a look in my gallery at his pictures. (I don't have any pics currently on this computer).

kbuchanan66 - sorry, I just joined today so new at this. I clicked on your name which took me to your profile page. However, once there I couldn't seem to find your gallery. How do I get there please? And if anyone can tell me how to shift enter to start a new paragraph, that would be awesome!

I'd say its safe to say he was some kind of mastiff mix. Someone on another forum I belong to had a boy who was a tosa mix and looked very similar to your boy. I'm sorry for your loss :(

I would have guessed French Mastiff and Boerboel. Sorry for your loss he looks like he was a champ. And yes Boerboels do come in that color. My girls mom is very close to that reddish brown. He was a very handsome fellow for sure.

Finally found detroitdogrescue.COM, that DDB does look a bit lanky... needs some TLC, for sure.

Cathreeno - so sorry for your loss of Dozer. He looks like a real, sweet puppy! Thank you for taking him in and giving him such a great life!

As for what mix he could be - no help there. I see mastiff, not sure about boxer, but those two are both foundation breeds, and in a lot of DNA. I wouldn't rule out the rott, either. Rotts can have great temperaments, too. He just looks great, to me :)

Our last dog was a find from PetFinder. He was an awesome mutt, too (Dane/Lab/+?). I love mutts!

As for making new paragraphs - no "shift" needed... just hit enter. If you're on the latest version of IE... it doesn't work for me either. I use Chrome as a browser here now just because of that. :) [And I'm liking Chrome quite a bit, all around, too.]

Welcome to the forum - lots of helpful people around!
