Mastiff - Which One?

I have no guesses as far as breed goes (I am horrible at guessing) but I would just say, treat him like a Fila. I have an EM that is definitely full bred EM but he is a very serious guardian and does not like people who he doesn't know. Your Elvis's temperment sounds a lot like his. He is the most fantastic dog in the world and I couldn't be happier and he doesn't care about other dogs or people out in public and is the most well behaved boy but he has a definite strike zone and I have to make sure noone gets inside of it. Luckily my life style is perfect for this so it works out but he definitely is not your normal everyday EM. Sounds like you love the pup and are doing what is best for him. Good luck to you. :)

Thank you. Our lifestyle is great as far as Elvis is concerned. Very rarely do we have company. Yes, I love him to pieces and he most definitely shows his loyalty to us, his cats, and what I call his adopted mom, our chihuahua. He is really tolerant as far as we are concerned, but like you descibed your EM, he has a definite strike zone and occasionally when I ask others not to invade it, they get kind of irritated. I have had people say he needs to be socialized more and the truth is that we are out on a daily basis and he is about as socialized as he is going to get. Thank you for the reply. I am a definite worry wart and working with Elvis is a whole other level than other dogs I have handled in the past.

I understand what you are saying. Ruger goes to work with me everyday and has since he was 6 weeks old and I take him damn near everywhere I go. You can't get more socialized than him but his temperment is his temperment. LOL I am so glad that he warns immediately so that all of the idiots that don't see an issue with walking right up to a very large dog that they don't know get stopped immediatley. People never cease to amaze me. Like you, I rarely ever have company so Ruger fits in just right. I look forward to hearing more as your boy grows. :)

Regardless of his breed, you are aware of his temperament and you can take the necessary precautions. The breeder should be shut down if they are selling dogs as one breed when in reality they are another breed. Isn't there an agency to report them to? It's breeders like his who are main contributors to shelter overcrowding, Craigslist listings and pups being PTS because of biting/attacking. F.I.'s!!!!!

Thank you for hanging in there with him. :)

As of right now, there is not anyone in the area that will deal with this. We have just now started doing the city tags in the last few years and for the most part there is no monitoring. I did pay for Elvis but it was a small amount and I knew when seeing him that he was not what they were claiming but the soft part of me would not leave him. I have told the breeders that they need to stop the breeding because they are not producing well rounded pups. Unfortunately I do not know if they have or not but I suspect not. An accidental breeding I can understand but not repeatedly. As it is now, I am considered unusual due to the way I take care of what we have and the time I invest in handling but I suspect as the area continues to grow there will be laws in place that will be enforced they are just not being enforced now. Especially if dog breeding and lack of care continues to be so rampant in my area. I do what I do because I have lived in areas with BSL and I know what I need to do to be a responsible owner of what is called dangerous breeds. Thanks for the information and insight that everyone has supplied!
