killing snakes?

Will a really good pellet gun kill a 3 to 6 ft. snake? If so what kind/brand should I look for? I really don't want to take a shotgun out, even though we have large lots, there are still kids and old people out and about.

What kind of snake is it? I hate the thought of killing *harmless* snake instead of relocating it but if you must, a shot to the head should do it. Snakes can live through quite a bit and depending on what kind of snake it is it may possibly survive a pellet gun if it isn't shot in the head.

YUP I'd be gone, moved, out of there lol. I'd go with the shovel because I live in Canada and don't have choices lol. Seriously I would try and relocate, I really love snakes so I couldn't hurt one

NO NO NO NO shovel! Rattlesnake, copperhead, or watermossican. I hate the damn things. Neighbor said he just killed 2 mossicans. We live near Cypress Creek that just flooded so we are hearing a lot about them right now.

Aha, so it is dangerous...hmmm have you tried mothballs...they tend to deter snakes. The shovel would bring you too close to danger to be honest and I find it kind of an awful way to die...for any animal.

I've heard of mothballs but we have a half an acre, that would be a lot of mothballs LOL and I'm afraid the dogs would get into them.

Pellet gun would have to be close and hit it just right. Greater chance you would injure it and it would slither away.

a higher powered air rifle should kill a snake, HOWEVER, the higher powered the more noise it makes. We've got one, and its not even THAT high powered, but it sounds like a "real gun" when you shoot it, so if the worry is the neighbors freaking out over gunshots you might be out of luck.

I DO suggest, if you get one, make sure its NOT a one shot gun (mistake we made) and make sure its either easy for you to pump up quickly for the next shot or uses CO2 canisters.

I'd suggest your local sporting goods store (not walmart), ask questions, explain what you want, take notes, and go hit the 2nd local sporting goods store and repeat, and compare the answers.

Slithering is not an option!!! Dead is the only choice.

Great suggestions Ruth, I didn't think about an air gun. Noise is not an issue, guns go off in here quite often. We live in the "countryhood".

I'd suggest a higher powered CO2 powered pellet rifle. No need to pump up the pressure, just make sure it holds mltiple shots....

A cheap .22lr with subsonic rounds would do the trick on any snake around here. Or you could pm me your address and my coonass neighbor could come over and get him some dinner. :D

I live right on lake houston so I know what you're dealing with. Came home a few times to a moccasin chilling on my front door mat. They don't bother me but my wife freaked when I told her.

So you've got nothing between a pellet gun and a shotgun? I'd say a nice .22 will set you straight, good for all varmints including snakes. Wouldn't trust a pellet gun to kill a 6-foot snake in one shot. Unless you are damn good with it, anyway.

I've killed many many rattlers and moccasins with pellet guns. I'd use a semi auto co2 gun. Point and dump every bb it holds into it. Then beat it with a shovel and hang his head on a stake to warn the others. Kinda joking there. hahahaha

The croc hunter said the only snake in the world he was affraid of was a moccasin. If you see one, they live there. They are very very aggressive. To the point of chassing you. There so un affraid, I can honestlt say I've had one let me live. Chainsaw, falling limbs, wood being drug out. The snake never moved till I stradled him. He then very very slowly entered the water and turned around about a foot away, and just stared. As if to say " Your still standing cause I let you"

Needless to say, My helper finished that trimming

I was using a shovel at the tender age of 10 to dispatch copperheads and cottonmouths. It’s not that big of a deal. A garden hoe works well too.
