  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Justice had another episode.

I guess we can rule out a toxin. Last night after we had put Justice in his crate for bedtime he let out the most hair raising yelps. By the time we had reached his crate(less than a minute) he was sitting up in his crate. He growled at us a couple of times. We talked to him in a soothing tone. He very quickly came to the front of the crate and seemed fine. I let him out. Other than the growling there seemed to be no postictal activity. No involuntary loss of bodily functions. I'll be calling the Neurologist in the morning.

Once again I'm asking for your good thoughts. Also any suggestions, throw anything out there, that it might be. I'm not convinced its seizures. If you are not a member and you are reading this as a guest but have some experience, please join and tell me your experience.

Sorry AB! This was different than the first episode right? Any chance is was something that startled him and cause him to yelp ? Had he been sleeping? Anything different about his day? I'm sure you've thought about all of these things but just wanted to offer my thoughts and support!

Both have been while he was sound asleep. The first time, I did the wrong thing but got panicked. I started yelling for Kismet and Jezzy to get back. I think this really startled him and made him panic. Last night we used nothing but soothing talk. I don't think he is out of it like a seizure. Thank you for your thoughts and support. For some reason it really does make me feel better. :)

Were you far away from the crate? I know when I have been at the practice and a dog starts seizing we can usually hear it from a good distance. I doubt she would be yipping during an episode but maybe when she came out if she was scared and that would explain the growling. Was she pretty alert though? They generally are pretty disorientated immediately after. Could it be something causing her pain?

Karen, we have a small house. He is in the living room but not far at all. I never heard the crate rattle, which I would think if he had a regular seizure I would have heard it. All I heard was the yelps and was in there in seconds. Within 2 minutes of getting to him, we let him out of the crate. He was perfectly normal. His gait was fine, no runny nose, eyes clears. We brought him back to the bedroom with us. He laid down and went right back to sleep.

There has been 3 or 4 other times that he has yelped out in his sleep but he lays his head back down and goes back to sleep. I have questioned if it could be pain but that does not seem to be high on their list of possibilities. I have had 3 other dogs through out my life that have had seizures and this comes nowhere close to what I saw with them. I can except epilepsy and honestly at this point would be relieved if it was. Thank you !

Oh no!! Sorry to hear this AB... I was hoping last time was a "one-of" incident. Thinking of you guys and sending positive vibes for Justice.

Update: It has been about 32 hours since his last episode. He is very whinny this morning. This is new, he is never whinny. He had soft poop this morning but nothing close to what I would call diarrhea. I gave him a pepcide. Hopefully, it is just a upset tummy. He is 4 months, could this be teething? He doesn't seem to be chewing a lot, something I would expect if it was teething.

I would start checking other medical reasons for the yelping and growling. Do you have a go pro or can you set up a camera on him in the crate when your not watching? Would be good to get whatever is happening on video.

Update: He just threw up his breakfast. He is throwing up yet again. Vet should be in at 8:00. In about 30 minutes. I'm getting dressed now.

Karen, I agree 100%. I don't think it is seizures and if that is the case I believe this needs to be treated as an emergency on the vets end, instead of a wait and see. I just don't know how to convey that to them.

No, that doesn't sound like seizures. AB, what do you mean by throwing up? Is it regurgitation or is it vomit? It may not be important to differentiate, but it may be very important. And unfortunately it's all I can think of at the moment. Here's a link for you on the difference.

Vomiting versus Regurgitating in Pets

Hugs for you all again. I'm so sorry.

Thank you, Boxergirl! Great article. I thought I knew the difference, I didn't.
