I need help. Serious medical

Believe me, I understand about that. I did more than grimace at the amounts for these two surgeries Ruger had. Crazy!

It's hard to really know if you are dealing with a true emergency. I'm kinda quick to run to the vet which isn't always the best way to go.

Maybe see what he feels/acts like when he wakes up? Maybe wake him and see? Is it normal for him to sleep so long? Has he had another bowel movement since? Did she give you any meds? Like anti vomit stuff?

Like everything else you have to just follow your gut feeling. I'm sure praying hard for that gorgeous boy.

Thank you SJ. I truly appreciate the break down you gave us. I am really scared of hydrocephalus. Okay, I'm scared of all of it. Texas A&M has a 24 hour clinic. I was reading that they will take patients through their 24 hour emergency clinic without referral( we have one) all they say is it should be an emergency. Do you think we should just show up there tonight or wait and go through the proper channels. Believe it or not I don't like breaking the rules but then again I can't let Justice die without trying everything I can. He has been asleep in his crate for 4 hours. I'm afraid to wake him but I'm really getting worried. I'm rambling, I'm sorry.
I would be very, very surprised if it was hydrocephalus. I think it's extremely unlikely with Justice. I have never even seen a non-toy breed (or non-bulldog, they get everything) with hydrocephalus, and they most commonly have an abnormal domed shaped skull and open fontanelle that you can spot from a mile away. Hopefully your vet wouldn't send him home if he wasn't stable. The way our teaching hospital here works is that if a dog like Justice comes in overnight, they will stabilize and provide supportive care overnight until the specialty services come in the next morning. If it truly is an emergency, they will call in whatever specialist is on call. Like today, the teaching hospital was closed, but we (anesthesia and surgeons) all got called in for a GDV surgery. While I was there, a dog came in for having seizures, but the dog was stable, so they just administered anti-seizure medications and provided supportive care and constant monitoring until the neurologists come in tomorrow morning. Just to give you an idea how I think things might go (if Texas A&M is anything like our teaching hospital). It is expensive though. A typical overnight visit with just supportive care might run about 500 dollars, and a full neuro workup with titers, MRI, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis runs like 2500 dollars here. If it will give you peace of mind, I don't think it will hurt anything to take him to the emergency service tonight. Keep us updated!

Sorry to disappear. I went to go check on Justice and he was just laying in his crate, awake. I got him out and offered him some chicken and rice. He wouldn't touch it. I got his raw meal and he took 5 or 6 bites. I took him out for a short walk, he seemed happy to be outside. Exploring and trying to get me to go further out back, just like every night. However, he came back in and threw up everything he had ate and the water he had drank. The vet said to give him pepcid if he threw up again. She said GI upset was not abnormal following a seizure event. We have an emergency vet less than 10 minutes away. I'm going to watch him the rest of the night. If he throws up again or shows any signs of distress we will go to that clinic to make sure he is stable. Then head out to A&M. It is about an hour and a half away. He is sleeping now and seems very peaceful.

I know everyone is sleeping by now but I will post if there is any change. SJ thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. It just shows what a fantastic vet you are and compassionate. Now how about moving to Houston and setting up your practice. If I were rich I would put the seed money down but I bet 5k wouldn't even come close. LOL :)

You are too sweet, Suanne. He is not able to keep anything down including water. I am trying to get in contact with A&M now. I will update as soon as they give me some guidance. My concern is not "right now", my concern is we can't get in to a neuro today. Local vets around here can keep him hydrated and fed but if we have a bacterial infection it needs to be taken care of now. Keep those positive thoughts coming.

We are on our way to A&M. I don't have a fancy phone so I will have no way to update. I have a new tablet but I still don't know how to use it but I will take it. Fingers crossed.

Oh no, I am just seeing this now. You must be beside yourself right now! I have no experience regarding seizures, but wanted to pass along my thoughts and good vibes. I'll be praying for Justice and you and Debra! His pictures are precious, he looks like a tough little fella.... and he has you and Debra - some very tough ladies with the biggest hearts - fighting for him too!As Kris said, if I can help in anyway just say the word, we are here and more than willing. Hoping to hear some good news from you soon.

best of luck with your pup ..... i've had 2 dogs with seizures, your pups symptoms are very different than either of theirs were .......... one had 2 seizures as a young dog and never had another , the other was treated with phenobarbital for her entire 10yr life ......... neither was ever attributed a cause ......

I'm so, so sorry you and your sweet baby are dealing with this!! He's stunningly beautiful - wonderful pictures. I'm new here, but I've dealt with two dogs that had seizures - one when I was younger and our female golden had them, she was put on phenobarb and did just fine, no cause was found. As an adult, our older sheltie had a pretty bad seizure, two of them, and we took her into the emergency vet. They asked if she'd gotten into something, like if a pill maybe had fallen on the floor or something - as careful as we were, I couldn't completely rule it out as we had a teenager on meds at that time. She lived MANY years after that, we had her on phenobarb for several years, then weaned her off and she was fine. The only other thing I can say is that YOU KNOW YOUR DOG BEST - trust your instincts - I see that you've taken him to A&M, and I'm glad to hear that...I pray they will find some answers for you and that there will be a good solution for your baby. Sending positive thoughts

Did the vet check out his limp or take his temperature? Wilson had a pretty serious knee joint infection when he was 5 months old. It came on fairly quickly but Wilson was limping, lethargic, lost his appetite and didn't drink a lot. By the time it was diagnosed as a knee joint infection the vet said his temperature had increased to the point where he was at risk of having seizures. It took the vets a while to figure out what it was as he didn't have and hadn't had any wounds or cuts and in the end they thought he might have picked some bacteria up from his raw food.
