I am a retired woman of adventure living in a small mountain community in New Mexico. I volunteer at a small rural animal rescue and have 2 rescued dogs, a rescued cat and 7 chickens who came with the house. My new "puppy" is a 100 lbs of black and brindle loveableness, probably a cane-corso/rottie mix. She is a handful and has been through some rough times before coming to live with me. She was surrendered by her family to a kill shelter in Northern New Mexico. She and 30 other healthy dogs were to be put down due to overcrowding when a local rescue group pulled all 30 at the last minute. The rescue group sent out frantic emails to their donor list asking for "24 hour foster homes" while they were getting their facility ready for 30 more dogs. I volunteered - only one night, right? I asked for an adult female and went into town to pick up my 24 hour foster dog.
Sounds corny, but it was love at first sight. She was skinny with her ribs showing and so hungry, but still a sweet, gentle giant who came calmly with me into my truck. We did not even make it out of the parking lot before I knew she was my dog. I bought her some food right there and a proper leash. My Bella spent 2 months in a shelter before coming home with me and is still a little bit shy and timid at times. She can also be a bit stubborn and willful, but we are working on that. She also eats leather leashes - yummy - and dog beds. Nobody's perfect.
