Hector's "place" work

season

It's a never-ending job for sure. I've upped my place work with Al too. Al needs structure in his life. We recently had some big changes and he's struggling with it. His anxiety is through the roof and I've had to really take steps back before we can move forward again. Place and other impulse control and focus work is helping. Sometimes though ... I just want a normal dog. He can make the other two *think* something is wrong even when it's not. Good thing they trust my opinion more than his. Lol.The work you've put into helping Hector is apparent. He's lucky to have you. We really do learn the most from the difficult dogs and you're a better owner/trainer for having him.
Well said..

LOL cute lil mutt! Hec did a fine job of holding his place and making eye contact too!
Eye contact is one of his strong suits. I didn't formally train a cue. He's a natural. He can stare into my eyes all day long if I let him. I've recorded one of his place sessions outdoors and I try not to give him eye contact as it distracts him and gets him excited. He can stare at me for up to 15 mins lol. He's a creep. Here's a short clip from yesterday. We worked on place for 30 mins outside. I'm thinking duration may not be the best thing outside right now. Perhaps more movement with multiple places would be more beneficial. FHD0014 - YouTube

OMG, what a silly little creature, lol. And good boy Hec!! I'm 99.999% sure that Rhaegar would not have been able to resist the chase and would have broken his place.

We have been working on place everyday. Yesterday I placed him and went to take a shower. I was not expecting him to stay in place, but I guess the boy is better than I thought. The adrenalized reaction with open front doors is more or less the same, but the duration of it has been reduced drastically. He still gets very adrenalized, but he is able to calm and quiet down quicker on his own. Today, there was a break in the rain so we went to the nice park near our house and I decided to work on place on new equipment. He was a bit distracted, but executed the command nicely. As for the skateboards, we have only spotted 2 since we started place work. One was in the dark quite a bit of distance away. He spotted them, but there was no adrenalized reaction. The other one was when we were in the car and one skated by us and again just a stare down, but he didn't make any noise which is very good because he does freak out in the car over the sight of them. I also bought a pet convincer and carry that on our walks.

We call mutt "el savaje" whether it's the correct word in spanish or not lol. I placed Hector because he was trying to disrupt the zoomies.

Hahahaha, you called Hector a creep. I say the same thing about Ella. She's so hyper aware of anything I do (or feel, which can be an issue) that we call her The Creeper. She also gets that same exact look on her face when the boxers are zooming. Hector is a good boy and I love him. Mutt is pretty darn cute too, for a little rag-mop.

Both Hec and Mutt are creepers. Sometimes I don't hear Hec sneak up on me and I turn around and he's behind me begging for food. Sometimes I don't know where Mutt is, but then I find him laying on a chair watching me. He's quiet and stealthy and quite comical.

The boys surprised me last night when I was getting ready for work. First I saw Mutt chilling in his crate and this dog has not been trained to use a crate nor like to be confined in one. All I've been doing is putting him in a crate every time I leave and there is no one to supervise him or when I work place with Hector to leave the house. The next surprise was Hector went on the place mat all by himself as if he understood the protocol in order to get to leave the house! It was too funny and strange. Two dogs doing something completely out of the ordinary. I snapped some pics and left and no one tried to charge the door nor did Hec freak out although he does know when I get ready for work.

Pre walk madness is quickly dying down. Still excited, but what's nice is that I can drill him until he quiets himself down before we head out. Today it took about 5 minutes and then I continued to drill him once we were outside. No reaction to skateboards today. We worked on his reactivity towards other dogs. He's fine when the dog is on the other side of the street, but being on the same side is another story. Today we must have been out for an hour patiently waiting outside a vet place waiting for people to pick up and drop off their dogs. I was happy to be able to get some work in at the beginning where an old man came out with his pug. We were about 15 ft away and I saw him zone in on the dog (ears up and head turned are his huge signals), so I corrected him with my pet convincer (small can of air) that was concealed in my sweater pouch. We continued heeling back and forth and I gave a blast of air every time he stared at the dog. After 3 blasts he started ignoring the dog. The next dog that we saw was like a Bernard/spaniel pup. We walked towards it and no correction was needed. We did a 180 once the pup saw us and pulled towards us. The next dog that came out was in the arms of an old lady. We were stationary at the time and he looked and did not care. As we did more heeling around the premises and a lot of waiting, he did something that he has never done before and that was laying down on his own. I swear this place work is really helping.
