  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Has anyone received a quote from ObamaCare yet?

I currently pay $55 a month for my health insurance on myself with no dependents. I'm 26 & I signed up for the lower deductible plan through my work. I know our rates went up in August, I used to pay ~$30. Not sure I can beat $55 a month with obamacare.

You probably can't beat $55/month with Obamacare, because the ACA policies would be in lieu of an employer-provided policy.
Right now you (and I) are on group policies provided by our employers - which means we benefit from the negotiations our companies were able to do with the insurance company.

My example of $200/month was for a single person in WA making enough $$ to not qualify for any subsidies.

If I add in a dependent, and lower the income... I still get to about $200/month... which seems like a lot to me... but it says I can apply for lower rates. Not sure what all that entails, as that would require me to make an account and probably fill out a bunch more stuff. Hmmm...

Still lots to learn on how this is all going to fall out.

I love that there are so many diverse responses on this thread, and we're all so civil about it!! :)

I'm curious as to what people consider "middle class"? For a family of four and for a single person? I'm thinking 60k for a family of four and 40K for a single person. I really don't know. Is that too high or too low?

I believe middle class is up to around 120k for a family. I might be off. But it was sure higher then I consider middle class. But what they consider poverty is higher then I consider poverty as well. That could be cause it's pretty cheap to live here compared to most places.

I have filled out the application and it is still "processing" two weeks later, but I'm being patient! I think what you qualify for has a lot to do with what state you live in as much as your income.

Chuck, check out the discussion forums about Canadian health care to get an idea of what I was talking about.... over 2 yrs for a hip replacement in some cases.... yea I guess you won't die but you cant walk w/o it, lol.

24K middle class? 24K in NYC would put you less of what you would make in welfare, food stamps, etc. That may put you in upper poverty class, lol. 110K is about lower middle class in NYC while a lil over 200k should put you in upper middle class territory. Obviously living in the sticks of West Virginia you could cut those numbers in half at least.

here guys, just to put it into prospective..... http://b-i.forbesimg.com/theapothecary/files/2013/09/Welfare-v-work-2.png . The numbers represent what those entitlements/benefits or whatever you want to call them equal to in each state. WAY more than minimum wage.... if you have that kind of dough rolling in and you are an unskilled laborer then why in the world would you trade that in for a job that would make less???? hmmmm, that's one way to keep you poor and to keep you voting for a particular party isnt it?

BTW a 2 min research showed that as of July 01, 2001 A Swedish citizen attempting to acquire foreign citizenship does not lose Swedish citizenship. I already knew that however had to look it up for some clarification.
My son was born in sweden and has dual citizenship

My son had dual also, thought he lost his Swedish when he turned 18, but since I clearly have not kept up with the new laws, guess I need to look that up too. lol Use to say he had 3 citizenship since he also is a member of the Comanche tribe.
Where in Sweden are you from Sadies Mom? if you don't mind me asking.

My mom on the other hand, who works for the same company pays over $1200 a month for her, my stepdad & my brother. So if she could save money switching to obamacare, it may work out better for her.

I'm from Eskilstuna, west of Stockholm but lived in Malmo for 5 years before I ended up in the US. Worked on the train [Malmo-Stockholm] so think I have been through Almhult a few times!

From what I've heard, it's the deductibles that are going up, some as much as 3 or 4 times for the same plan. I've got insurance through my job and our rates have gone up a little the last few years, but this time the rates are going up and the deductible is as well. It's literally doubling for some of the plans offered. That's where they're hiding the cost of the ACA.

Yes... and they told us straight up that they only cover service connectable things... now if I showed up there tomorrow with an injury idk if they would help because I've never tried it... but just stating what they said...we had a long class on this when I was exiting the Corp.. but hell I'm covered until 26 anyways... Also your deductible is inflated because your company lowered its policy...or the insurance company raised the deductible.... raising deductibles is not mandated in the ACA

Tiger.. you are covered, trust me. go to the V.A and get yourself the V.A card. My brother has been out since his deployment to the sand box in 2003 and he goes when ever he wants. I would go if its something small and I dont want to pay any co pay or anything...usually for dental stuff... I just dont trust them for major things... even for my wisdom tooth extraction they sewed up the gums with gauze inside of it... worst doctors in the world. Like I said if it isnt life threatening you could take your chances with them, lol.

Tiger, it may not be mandated that they raise deductables but it makes sense if they do raise it so this way they dont lose out on the extra revenue.... they are a business after all.

So should we blame ACA or greedy corporate pigs?
