Fila meeting an agitator

Glad to hear it went well and can't wait to see the video!

On the plus side (at least in theory) properly done bite work would teach Cane when to act that way and when not, and to respond better to commands to back down. On the other hand I can totally understand why you'd not want to encourage him since he's being a brat now.

And yah, you've done good work with Ziva!

Thanks Ruth!

It's kind of ironic. The proudest moment for me is when Ziva came into my arms. Who would have thought.

180lbs of dog hitting the sleeve. Whew...can't wait to see that.

You already know AB but Ziva thanks you. :) Very lucky to have her.

Glad everything went well with Cane! That phot of Ziva is just heartbreaking. What an impressive job you have done. I look forward to seeing the video of the big boy in action.

I'm gad Cane did as expected, but even more happy that your girl did what you had hoped. She may not be the tough bitch, then again when the real thing comes up maybe she will. But she loves & trusts you, and that's a huge milestone for a dog like her.

That pic of Zive was saddening. I know she's glad to have a great home with the best parents a dog could want. Glad to see Cane is large and in charge. I laugh when I remember asking you about a play date before I knew anything about Fila's.

Sounds like a good day, for different reasons. I didn't know about Ziva's history...so happy that she found a true home with you, and in your arms that day. :)

Cane's response is testimony to just how hard-wired these Filas are--- good job!

Thank you all so much. I have waited 3 years for this day and the best moment was a scared fila girl that came to her mom. I'm sure not many fila people would find that a result worth reporting. LOL

I could only see the ass end of Cane, so I can't wait to see the vid myself. I can't believe what a teenage boy he has been since.

Gunny, I have followed the saga about trying to rescue. I agree that 75% of them are jokes but the dogs aren't. Ziva fell into our lap, from a small group that pulls dogs when they can. Please don't give up, it is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. I have the number of a lady that rescues, I would be glad to make contact with her and ask her to keep an eye out for you. She is in Alabama but they can arrange transport sometimes. Ziva came from North Carolina, we met them half way in New Orleans.

Also, if you ever need to test Gunny or just want to do some obedience work. The guy that came out was pretty good. He is out here in the Cypress area so it might be a little far.

I'll defintiely keep that in mind because I definitely want a Fila when we get some land.

ab you aint wrong for being happy bout Ziva. You would not be wrong if Cain just came to you. They are your dogs and imo it is much more important to have a dog trust you(as you can trust them) then it is to have them be hard. Their your dogs and one came from a bad deal. Besides, I bet together, Zivz may turn into a monster when Cain does. I know our mild manner dane mix is a nut with Kona. If they get into with dogs next door, duke is 10x harder to get right than Kona. And Dukes what I refer to as a sissy. I like to think Duke has faith in his sister Kona. Long as sis is there, dukes a gorilla

LOL, Raven. I'm afraid there are no new alligator shoes or bag. Maybe we'll work on that next.

Ruth, you are very correct. I was looking for suggestions to make the experience go more smoothly, not for guidance about how to find someone or what I should be looking for from my dogs. We've been to Working Weekends and Shows; I've attended several temperament tests. I wanted some ideas about doing it at home.

My apologies for the delay in posting the results of yesterday's meeting with an agitator, but we were all worn out. Keep in mind that we're older....food and a long winter's nap were needed after all the excitement.

I think I mentioned that one of my concerns was with Cane's “mellowing out†over the last year or so; he made it clear yesterday that it is an attitude of calm confidence. My boy done me proud, not backing down at all. We started out behind the chain link fence, and it took both me and Debra to hold him back when Cane saw the agitator approaching the fence. After the agitator made several threatening approaches and retreats, I agreed to tie Cane to the front of the fence, with me holding the leash to his flat collar, while the agitator approached with a sleeve. Cane hit the sleeve several times, and the agitator let the sleeve slide off a couple of times, but Cane couldn't care less about that sleeve. Until the agitator moved back 15-20 feet, Cane was only interested in getting to the agitator. BTW, Cane was much more aggressive outside the fence, then he was behind the fence

The agitator (and I) was pleased with Cane's nerve. The agitator did suggest doing some bite work, but since Cane has decided to go all macho towards Ziva since yesterday's coupe, I'm not sure that we'll be providing any more opportunities for him to swagger. He's being aggressive, butting her with his head and trying to mount her. With her bad hips, that is an absolute no-no in our house, and we're having to put him in his place quite a bit.

The agitator was surprised by Cane's size. I had told him that Cane was about 170, but Erwin said everyone adds 20 pounds to their dog....he couldn't believe I hadn't exaggerated, and after seeing Cane, wasn't sure that I shouldn't be estimating him at 180.

Ziva wasn't nearly as fierce as Cane, but the agitation did provide one moment of intense pleasure for me. As expected, she had a fit and put on a great show at the stranger in her yard on the other side of the fence – until Erwin approached and swung at her across the fence mildly with the sleeve. She backed down quickly, retreating several feet to get away from him.

Later, we had both of the Filas out at the same time, inside the fence. We had Ziva tied to the fence, and we were working with Cane. Somehow, Ziva slipped her collar and was loose. She didn't run to the house, and she didn't run to the back of the yard; she just kind of stood there, looking confused. We pulled Cane back from the fence, and I went to get Ziva. I squatted down, held out my arms, and she came right to me and sat down so that I could enfold her in my arms. I was so proud of my girl. Remember that just a little more than a year ago, she came to us at about 80 pounds, a stray who'd been on the streets awhile, just a bundle of nerves, and afraid to trust.

When she came to me for protection, showing that she has learned to trust me, I couldn't have been prouder.

As Chuck said, one never knows until a real situation presents itself how one's dogs will react, but my big old Americana Fila showed that he has strong nerves and the desire to protect his momma. What more could you ask for? Overall, this was a very positive experience in so many ways.

The agitator said that he would send be a copy of the video he made, I will post it when I get it.
Such a sad picture, but so glad it went well for you. She is a beautiful girl.

It was NYDDB! Ziva has truly changed our lives. She has taught us a lot about overcoming and trust. At least 2 or 3 times a night, I have to gently wake her up or try to comfort her in her sleep, she has really violent dreams, growling, yelping, legs just a going.

I still think she is the meanest dog I have ever owned. Like Ruby said and I concur that when it comes right down to it, I'm not sure she wouldn't kill someone if they tried to hurt her or any of us.

Chuck, that is why the agitator had us bring Z out when he was working Cane. He wanted her to see him in action.

Mooshi, thank you. We think she is a pretty girl, too but much prettier on the inside.

Thats why I say the test is nothing more than a indicator. Budda was as friendly as could be. But even I could not put my hands on him. He would have failed a temp test bad as he would probly just stand his ground and look at the fool. But go ahead on and hit him. My buddy Fred trust Kona more than Duke. You know Kona wants to bite you. Duke is just crazy according to him. And as many little critters as he's killed, I can agree with that a little. He to would fail a temp test so bad. And solo, he probly would do nothing. But with his co-defendant, he may very well be the dog to get your throat. I also think some of them hard ass filas would ball up under real pressure. I was always told not to run from a dog, as it will chase you. That chase is a show. Same with any dog raring up on a lead. I know Fila owners love to think that it aint a show. We love to think our dogs are bout it. Including my self. But the fact is all bully's are tough guys till their punched in the mouth. Thats where the rubber meets the road. And all the nerdy kids who get picked on are sissies till they punch that bully in the mouth. In all honesty Cain is the one I would worry least about like Fred with Kona. You know where that dogs at. Z is the one who will feel backed into a corner and likely feel she has no option. A dog doing what he knows to do verse one doing what they have to do aint the same and the later could be real ugly

Your photo of Ziva reminded me of when I got Mia 14 months ago, don't care what breed she is, some think Fila or a mix but they are banned in Australia. She only weighed 77 lb when I got her, didn't seem as ribby as Ziva so perhaps Ziva weighed less. Mia is the same she was so scared of everything when I got her, she is growing in confidence now but still will not tolerate strangers. I am still the only one who can feed or walk her, she is just tolerant of the vet, would not let a stranger pass me in the street without lunging or barking though! i am so glad you got Ziva, she deserves the best and has got it now! I bet like me you would NEVER part with her, they are so special when you see them blossom from a scared animal into one with confidence and love!1st day.jpgMia 1st week 006.jpgMia now.jpg
