Cane Corso/ Italian Mastiff puppy exercise

Hello all! My name is Lindsey and I am new to the Mastiff. I will be getting my pup in about a month(he'll be 11 weeks) and I wanted to know how much I should exercise him. A mile a day by walking? Every other day? And when should I increase the workout? I also have about ten steps to walk up to my door and they are steep. Should I let him walk up and down them or just up (because of the possible launching)? If I shouldn't let him walk down them, for how long should I wait?
Thank you so much for your help!
Lindsey

Welcome here! Others here can give you great advice on your questions. I haven't had a CC, so don't really know. And we'll all be looking forward to pictures.

Hello! Great news about your puppy. We have regular visits to a vet physiotherapist for our Bullmastiff. She told us that we shouldn't let him go up or down stairs at all, ideally until they are 18 months to 2 years. Now thats not really practical but anything you can do to prevent jumping/stairs is good for as long as you can. We always lift him in and out of the car (even now at 10 months he puts his paws up and we lift the rest) - to prevent his joints being damaged which is likely to lead to hip/elbow damage later in life. I wouldn't do any 'formal' exercise at all at 11 weeks- playing with you in the backyard should be enough until he is 5/6 months. Then the rule is 5 minutes of exercise for every month of age. Make sure to walk him on grass/soft surfaces as much as possible when you do start as concrete can be hard on their joints too.

Hope this helps

General rule of thumb for giant breed puppies is a 5 minute walk per month of age. Let them romp more so than talking them for a "walk".

Don't let them jump down from anything higher than what they can get up on themselves. For instance, if a puppy can get up on a low stool, it's o.k. for him to jump off it. If YOU pick a puppy up and put him on the couch, but he otherwise couldn't get up on the couch himself, he should NOT be jumping down from the couch.

Stairs are a bit more controversial... my breeder said stairs are perfectly fine from any age, don't worry about it. My puppy has gone up and down the stairs since we brought her home (well, since she could manage them, I did carry her for a bit). She's only 5 months old now, and there's NO WAY I could carry her up and down our stairs every day, all day. Just be careful if he starts to jump from too high up on the stairs, as mine did, and don't allow that.

Have fun with your new puppy!!!
