Cane Corso Health concern (acne)

Hi there, thank you for the nice welcome to the mastiff forum. I'm contacting back with a health concern for my soon to be one year old (July 5th) Cane Corso named Leela. She has acne on her upper lips and chin. We consulted the vet and he prescribed Derma-Vet Ointment (Nystatin-Neomycin Sulfate-Thiostrepton-Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment). So far it hasn't helped very much. We use stainless steel bowls and have removed all plastic toys. Attached below is pictures of the areas that are affected. We are going to start washing the bowls daily because that was recommended. The acne on her chin breaks open constantly and bleeds on our hands and whatnot. Was wondering if A. there were any suggestions for curing up the acne and B how to prevent the chin from breaking open so often (maybe a cone?). Any suggestions are appreciated.IMAG0856.jpgIMAG0857.jpgIMAG0860.jpg

sounds like the right steps to take, I wsh water bowl twice a day and use a soft towel to dry faces after drinking and that helped clear up the acne along with the perscribed ointment!! keeping them dry will help them from bleeding also. so if you see her drinking follow up with a soft towel. she is beautifil

My girl went through the same around the same age, along with what you are doing I started cleaning the areas with 50/50 apple cider vinegar and water after eating and before bed, helped to clear good. She also seems to have grown out of it around 16months old. I never used any kind of prescription or ointment, from everything I've heard they generally work good to help with outbreaks.

They don't need chemicals and ointment. Clean their face often and wash there bowls, toys, bedding etc frequently.

I did the apple cider vinegar/water solution when Kryten broke out. His were so bad that they would break and bleed too.

Same issue in the past here! If I hear drinking I run to the towel and wipe his face and jowls! I used the acv/water mix for a long time...now they aren't so bad..just a bump here or there when I haven't wiped well enough or missed a few drinks :)

Drinking water from a clean bowl isn't going to cause acne. No need to get paranoid. That stuff clears up as they get older. You can clean all u want and they will still get breakouts from time to time.

This is good to know. I've started wiping mines faces after they eat and sometimes after they drink so they don't create a mini stream in the house.

Gertie, my Bullmastiff, has the same exact problem - in the same places; I like all the suggestions provided by the group - the Apple Cider Vinegar/Water mix is interesting - I clean both Gertie and Rottie Reuben's ears with that mixture. IMG_1588 (640x480).jpg

Same issue here previously - scared us half to death the first time his started bleeding. We tried the apple cider vinegar mix with Angus and he hated the smell. Poor baby would run and hide shaking like a leaf if he even got a whiff of it. Same with the ointment the vet prescribed - which clearly stated on the label not to be ingested or used near the mouth or eyes. Yes I ask more questions before filling prescriptions now. Switch to Betadine watered down to an ice tea color soaked into wash cloth. Cleared them up within a week of twice a day washing. Now when he gets an eruption they clear up within day. No worries about ingestion or in his eyes.

Max has same issue. He's been on antibiotics 3 or 4 times now and it clears quickly with antibiotic, but he has to be on it 4 weeks. Within a few weeks, it comes back. Lots of discussion about this with the vet. We don't start him on it unless they seem to be infected ( different between green/yellow bloody drainage and bleeding). Clean/bleach stainless bowls, Bleach/hot water all his bedding, all plastic stuff gets washed too. I keep drooly rags everywhere to dry him and gently wipe. I wash his face with a special soap for "folliculitis" and use hibiclense soap too. Nothing seems to work. I'm holding out this time and going to avoid the antibiotics. ACV has not been helpful for Max. HOPING he grows out of it soon!

Yep, I agree about the smell issue - Reuben and Gertie both smell like salads after I clean their ears :)

Acne tends to come on at puberty, from five to eight months of age. Typically it is gone by the time the dog reaches one year of age. It is necessary for its health.
