can an owner teach his own dog to bite the sleeve?

I think I am asking this right. If I got a bite sleeve can I safely teach my dog to bite it? I am already thinking of many problems doing this.

No expert here, especially after my last topic I posted. But the experts say it can't be done in different drives like defense drive, fight drive; only prey drive. More like a game of tug. So to get the true defense drive response you need a decoy.

Some people say no...but I do it and I know ALOT that do..just keep it nice and fun lots of big choppy movements shoot do what you would do with a tug or anything else just use the sleeve....I got kronos use to the clatter stick, barking on command, outing like a boss (in prey anyway) and biting like a crocodile chomping on the wife (lol what a good sport) all very prey motivated and purely as a game...but there will come a point that you wont be able to work your own dog..

Tiger, I'll play with Miel with the sleeve and then Louie (10 month DDB) wants to jump in and have a bite. Is that a bad idea? I thought that would be a good thing because he's learning from Miel. He likes the sleeve more than the jute tugs, lol.

I think it would be fine...i love when they learn good things from one another shoot if you had a chihuaha id let him join in too...I think the only time I would stop is if they where getting serious about it...I even fight with the guy on the ground and everything and hes still my best buddy

Mike good question, curious myself. Stone has a decent mouth for a GM and actually likes to tug. I still would like to work with someone though personally.

I will say it like this.
If you do NOT know how to properly offer the sleeve
If you do NOT understand how to make the dog want to come get the sleeve
If you do not know the difference in a good delivery to a bad delivery of the sleeve
If you are pushing the sleeve to the dog

Then in all reality you are not teaching the dog properly.. Can end up being more of a mess for a real decoy to have to fix

Just bc you teach or try to teach a sleeve bite do not expect the dog to delivery a real bite later

I personally teach all my dogs before they go to training with our decoy in the club but then I actually decoy and know how to properly set up all like I stated above ..

My best advice is teach the dog to mark on a tug, teach to take full bite, teach to desire the tug. This is much smarter and will help if you plan to move forward with bite work

Thanks for answering Deb. What do you mean by "mark on a tug" and will any rope type tug work or do I need to use something that is like arm thick? (I have one like that BTW)

Not a problem Mike
Tomorrow I have club so I will get you some video of the dogs doing
Marking on the tug
Teaching full grip
Teaching the delivery

I will also take a photo of tugs looking like.

Remember this is all needs to be in Prey/Play drive as you will want it to be enjoyable and desired

Cool, thanks I can make up something like that. My trainer says she has someone that will test Jade and will teach me how to bring her confidence in biting up if needed. And she will not charge me! woohoo.
I had another chance to see he guard the property again yesterday too. There are more renters next door and they seem pretty decent folks, but the dad was throwing snow at his kids and Jade thought it was bad so she got close to the fence and puffed her lips at him a fwew times. He saw it and realized she was talking to him. So he dropped the snow to see and she sat down. He picked up snow and made a throwing gesture at his kids and Jade growled. Then he saw me on my deck and asked if she was guarding his kids. I told him she likes kids so I think that she is. He chuckled and nelt down next to the fence and Jade stood up and growled at him. I told him she likes kids and you aren't a kid. He got up and walked along the fence and Jade paced him back and forth until he went up on there deck. He commented that she was very intimidating and asked abou her breed. I let him know about the BB a little but told him to do a bunch of research before even thinking about getting one. She kept her eyes on the guy the whole time. I really like how she works, she has a great instinct for guarding.

Mike just want to say ... I am unable to play tug due to the head concussion ..
So what I am doing in the video is just marking this is why Anabis sits before he gets it ..
Poor pup was tired bc before I made video he was weight pulling

So as well as what you did I should hold on to the bait and allow her to pull and tug it some.

Mike the best way to start is put a tug in a rope to flirt & bring out her desire to want to catch it

Once she is wanting the tug prey then take to you hands, keep it as prey and allow her to win when she bites, after she is holding (possessing it) then the tug fight begins .. She must win to keep the confidence :)

Remember not all dog will but owner or bite tugs out of owners hands

If you are not completely understanding we can talk on phone if needed
Xade will not bite a sleeve on me

I guess that should be a good thing when they will not bite the owner even when prompted to do so. I have a hemp mesh tug about as big around as an arm that Jade already likes. Jusat for fun last night I teased her with it and she jumped up and full mouth bit it. I let her take it and praised her. This morning she was carrying it around like a prize.
