Ok, so this thread is just going to be our ongoing saga of finding a dog. The one I posted a picture of was adopted, but that's fine, he was probably going to be much bigger than what we are looking for. But, we FINALLY actually met a real live dog tonight! It seems like it is really hard to find a dog that sounds right that doesn't already have applications in before us or who hasn't been adopted by the time I even find them.
Anyway, we went to meet this guy. About a year or so old, 60 pounds, but really little, doesn't even come up to my knees. They think Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Frenchie mix. The foster thought maybe a little OEB, but I'm not seeing that so much. I'm not sure what he is, but he is CUTE! And very nice and very smart. The foster has been working with him on impulse control and basic commands, he waits for food, waits to go out the open door, etc.
Now, my concerns are he seems to lack bite inhibition and has a fairly decent prey drive. I don't know much about bite inhibition, and I've never dealt with a dog without it, but he bites so hard when he plays with the resident dog he draws blood. Even while we were there, they were just playing and he was not being aggressive in any way, but he punctured skin. She even has a scar and I could see 3 recent little wounds. While they were playing she rolled on her back and he bit her neck and shook his head like he was shaking a toy. He does that to my dogs and he is going to get in trouble with them, they are both very nice, and Lillie plays really roughly, but they don't tolerate BS.
Second concern, my cat. With the prey drive, which is not over the top, but higher than either of my dogs AND the bite inhibition and shaking, I'm not confident of my cat's safety. A dog who chases and harasses a cat is one thing, a potential cat killer is whole different level. As much as Simone really liked him, and he was pretty drawn to her, on our way home she agreed he probably wasn't a good fit with our dogs and almost started crying when I explained how hard he could bite our cat... poor girl, she's so sensitive! But this is him - too bad it wasn't a good match, he'd make a great little training buddy, really food motivated and pretty athletic
