Better Business Bureau: Missouri overwhelmed by dog breeders

KSDK -- According to a recent Better Business Bureau study, Missouri is so overwhelmed by the number of dog breeders it can't effectively regulate the industry.

The BBB said the key findings from the study are:

- 30% (1,200 of 4,000) of nation's federally licensed dog breeders are in Mo.
- 1,800 licensed dog breeders in Mo.; 2.5 times as next highest state
- Southwest section of Mo. is hub of the puppy industry
- While law mandates annual inspections, Mo. Dept. of Ag. has 13 inspectors
- Puppy broker Hunte Corp. of Goodman, Mo., buys & sells 90,000 puppies per year
- State auditors repeatedly reported state doesn't annually inspect all breeders
- Lack of law enforcement allows continuation of substandard kennels

BBB President Michelle Corey joined NewsChannel 5's Leisa Zigman to discuss the findings.
