Anyone else get "beef" for feeding raw?

Anyone else get "beef" for feeding raw?

I swear I feel as though I am in a constant battle regarding raw food. As you know little bit had a rough two weeks when after I brought him home. While he's doing fine I am catching all the grief. I admit he is VERY lean and I am tying to get weight put back on him so he doesn't look like "starvin' marvin." However I constantly given the third degree when I tell people I feed him raw.

For example, yesterday, a good friend a mind got on the subject while we were joking about little bit's weight. I LOVE these people dearly like they were my own family, but I swear whenever the subject of raw comes up they feel the need to try to convince me to feed kibble, puppy food. Yes these are the same people that buy any dog food on sale regardless of brand and I admit their dogs do quiet well on it. They think raw is unhealthy, he could choke, and why he's skinny is because of the lack in nutrients in raw.

Another incident, a few times me and my co-worker went at it with dog foods ( nothing serious just a debate) He swore up and down that SD was the best food you could give your dog also that he had a cousin that studied nutrition. Who also recommended SD. Fast forward 3 or 4 months he asks me about a food I used to feed Thor. I told him stopped kibble because of the price and recalls. He tries to tell me that dogs cannot handle such foods and again its not good for them.......

Even my parents knowing for over 5 years I feed Thor raw still could not accept the idea. Its not as bad as it used to be, but every now and again dad likes to start up, lol. Especially now that I am feeding little bit raw.

When I worked for vet I did my best to stay off the subject, even had on vet scold me saying " You can't argue with medicine, and experience!"

When people ask me what I feed my boys I'm met with either fascination or disgust on the subject with raw. Usually its disgust, "Oh your raising killer dogs" " What about salmonella? Don't they get sick?" " They will choke on the bones!" " There's no nutrition value!" " Its just a fad on the internet, you can't believe what's on the internet."

Apologizes for the long post but that was something I wasn't too pleased with yesterday with my friend on the subject.

I don't gut anyone for what they feed or do unless its harmful, but this is coming for a person who's dog ingested bleach water, lol. However I wish they would do the same and respect what I do with my boys.

Your thoughts?

My male just went through a growth spurt on the RAW and he looks super thin. We have upped his RAW but people do stare when we are out places (hmmm or maybe they are just staring at him ;) ) but I do get the comments from people who don't agree and I simply tell them they can feed/care for their dogs the way they want but much like raising kids I will do it my way and please refrain from voicing opinions I don't care to hear. I have no interest in exchanging ideas with people who are closed minded themselves, makes my willingness to listen shut off.

in my experience in this site I kind of felt like I was being judged badly when I switched from raw back to kibble. Its a two way street sadly..

Feed what you want as long as you and your dog are happy and healthy...opinions are like belly buttons..everyone has one...

I know raw's not for everyone, but I do think raw is one of the better things you can do for your dog. And it drives me nuts when the reason to NOT feed raw is "but the bacteria!!".....(sorry Duke)

My parents (and other blood related family) don't live very close, so I don't have to deal with them over the dogs' diets very often (my mom is one of those folks who considers it a fad). My husband's family is very supportive of raw. His sister fed raw to her GSD's and they credit it as being the ONLY reason her female lived to the age of 10 after she was diagnosed with a HUGE list of medical problems at a very young age. I had some trouble convincing my husband that WE should do it, but now that we are he's totally convinced, for all his occasional griping about the dogs being fed better than we are (which is true, but neither of us exactly has high end tastes in foods). The vet's not thrilled, but IS remarkably tolerant about it in comparison with some vets I've dealt with.

Thankfully Apollo's coat (even at summer weight) is thick enough to hide how slender he is, and Arty's built alot like a sighthound anyway so that doesn't draw as many comments.

People will always try to prove you wrong however it takes more then 1 person to make it in to a debate, I can care less what people think & say about how I care for my dog. I know Chico is well taken care of, he is healthy, well mannered and loved by us. The way I look at it, YOU shouldn't get indigestion for the food I eat.

Sorry you felt that way. I think the impression that most of us got is that you wanted to feed raw. I was just pointing out that kibble is just as dangerous as raw meat.

Angelbears, I thought the same.....

Duke maybe I skimmed through the post wrong but I thought you wanted to feed raw as well, but your wife did not? In either case yes you are right it can be a two way street there are just as many raw feeders who are quick the throw the book at kibble feeders and vise versa. I say to each is own.

I agree with everyone else about the raw feeding and the puppy stages with these guys still doesn't make it any less annoying though, lol.

Guess Im blessed I found such a fabulous vet. When i asked her about raw she nearly jumped up and down with glee, said it would be so much better for Tess. She's a holistic vet. DD you can tell your friends Dr. Maja highly recommends feeding raw as it is good for the joints etc because of the nutrients they get in the meat and bones.

When I took Titan to the vet and talking to other dog owners, someone started on the subject of food. I told them I feed Titan raw and they looked at me and Titan like we were devil worshippers. I stood my ground and told them it was the best decision I'd made for Titan. BTW, he's gained 5 lbs since going on raw (March 2012), he's at 115 lbs.

Duke, I too, read your post that you wanted to feed raw and your wife did not. I believe we were trying to give you some good info to pass onto the wife to convince her about feeding raw.

Lol dont get me wrong, I'm all about raw feeding IF your situation allows for it. To me, raw IS THE BEST option for optimal health BUT, if you can't do it you just can't do it. So the next best thing is kibble.

I gotta tell you I feel the same way sometimes. NO ONE has ever criticized me for how we feed our pack, but I still feel...inadequate, I guess. And BTW Duke, I always heard that opinions are like a different body part that everyone has....:)

DD I did'nt know you got a new pup. What kinda pup you get? Tell them to explain where wolves are buying their food at. Thing about debate, you need to enjoy the fight. If you dont enjoy the fight, just stop them short. It's your dog, nuff said.

Duke, I didn't notice a scolding. We're all family here at this forum. Like family, we're sometimes going to say things to others that actually mean crap or hurts feelings. Like family, we have to forgive the crap and move forward.

I apologize if I scolded... *hug*

Duke I still don't remember any scolding in regards to your feeding raw, except from your wife.

Yeap , had him for almost two months now, same breed as Thor, been meaning to update some photos. He's growing like a weed, can't believe he's up to Thor's chest already.

I can do a good debate but the problem is people get emotional rather than passionate. I'm passionate about a lot things but I would never resort to name calling or petty attacks. Once they start doing that I'm done. On top of that I refuse to have a discussion with them again.

Was never "upset" in the first place, just concerned, but ok.....apparently the "issue" was resolved.
