Antler Question

While I was in Petsmart the other day with the dogs I showed them the antlers. Daisy acted EXTREMELY interested which never happens in Petsmart. She usually brushes everything off & then proceeds to poop on the floor. Duchess was completely uninterested. I bought one for Daisy, it's the puppy one about 4 inches long & is a deer antler. Cost about $7. Ever since I brought it home it has become Daisy's new security blanket. She carries it every where. She rubs on it. Hides it, growls at it, jumps on it & licks & gnaws on the bigger end. Do they have some kind of scent on them that attracts dogs? Duchess will not even go near it. I guess that's a good thing? My question is how do dogs wear these down? Can some of you post pics of your worn out antlers so I can get an idea? At this rate this antler will last Daisy the rest of her life.

Keep in mind that neither of mine is overly enthused by antlers. They'll chew on them occasionally, but not tons.

This one's fairly new, there's some wear on the marrow, but thats about it:

This one's older, the marrow is gone, and the outer shell is starting to wear down:

I've not tried the whole-unsplit antlers, I've got some slices of moose antler that neither has seriously chewed on.

We took found antlers and cut them down to puppy safe size, and the pups loved them. They're still in the chew rotation.

Awesome! Thanks Ruth! I wasn't exactly sure what they looked like when they had been chewed on for a while. Daisy's still looks new, she insists on playing with more than actually chewing on it. As each day goes by she tries to chew it a little more.

I'd definitely do that when I'm up in Wisconsin for deer season but I don't typically find any antlers in the places that I hunt.

I had to laugh when I was reading your post. Crickett acts the exact same way....she LOVES antlers and will growl at them, roll on them, throw them in the air. She eventually settles down and proceeds to chew on them. The must have a scent that she likes, but she is a chewer for sure!

Lol yeah she's pretty goofy. She's actually snuggled up with it now! You can barely see it but she loves that thing! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1361398812.282870.jpg

I can take a pic of the antler I bought my Weim Maus last week. Once I gave it to her it was like an addiction. I was worried she may gnaw it all within a day. So occasionally I'll take it away from her. But now she gnaws on her antler when she just wants to relax. Her favorite way is to place in on my lap and gnaw on it.

Jax loves his antlers! I too laughed at your post as you were describing him and his antler perfectly! A friend of the family gave Allie (my daughter) a mounted deer head a few months back. I recently painted her room so it was sitting in the hallway waiting to be hung. I heard and unusual chomping and knew Jax was up to something. I walked in to find him standing next to the head and chomping on the rack! I had to laugh...and then move the deer head to a more secure location!

I got the whole antlers because they last longer for my guys. I buy them in pairs and 1 lasts up to a week while the second will last for a few months. They have had this one for a couple of weeks now.

The color has been chewed off on the ends.

They have started working on the marrow.

Zoey only gets her when she is in her crate or when she goes to the kennel. We have had it almost a year now, and it only looks like the whole one above. It was definitely a worthwhile investment.

Interesting! Thanks guys! I laugh only bc daisy also insists on bringing the antler to bed (aka my bed) she is allowed to sleep with me only bc she weighs 6 lbs & barely takes up any space.

I have a whole base of an elk antler. Barron loves his and usually picks it over the bones he has. The color on the ends are really faded and both ends the marrow it chewed out.

I have tried to get Ruger to show some interest in the antlers and he just walks away. I figured he would be all over it but nope!

It's funny you say that. Bought the extra large black kong for my first EM. She hated it. Duchess has it now & I call it her precious. She goes ape shit over that thing. Considering taking a pic & sending it to the manufacturer bc she is very close to having that thing destroyed. Thought they couldn't be destroyed?!? ;)
