8 Week Old... Seems on the smaller side? Weight concern.

Reina, our 8 week old (DOB 07/06/13) Presa Canario pup is coming in at just around 13lbs. She would be my first Presa so not sure on puppy development. I was assured that she is completely healthly, but looking at other pups her age I feel she may be under weight. Her father is around 140 lbs and her mother around 90lbs. Any other PC owners with insight? I attached a photo, I'll try to get a better side profile once I'm home this evening. Just looking for a way to compare her growth with another females. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

No need to concern yourself if she's been vet checked then nature will take its course ... It will send you mad comparing her with others I know I've been there lol my boy had a bad dose of the skoots which kept him below average then a dose of worms which didnt help .. Spent more money and time on him than any of my dogs maybe I'm just more protective in my older years lol as long as she's getting up mischief and eating her food nature and her genetics will take over I've finally accepted that my boy is different from his siblings and as long as he's with me I'll let him become who he was meant to be not what I expected ... Start a new post with her own growth and development fill it with pictures and her weights etc for others who may have your concerns and when you need any advice this is the site to find it from
She's lovely and will give u many years of love so welcome and congrats on your new addition

What a cutie!
She looks very sweet!

What the others said... don't worry.

Our EM pup was only a little heavier at that age, and she's 1.5 years and 140lbs now... her mom was 185lb, dad was over 200...

Feed her well, keep her thin and love her bunches!

And please do start a growth thread... that way we can all see pictures of her as she grows. :)

Will do! Thanks for the advice. Also, knowing this breed has hip issues what are things I should look for? And at such a young age would they even be noticeable? The breeder did mention parents had the hips checked, but I'm not sure the scores. I guess I can just use this thread to track her development, or is there a better place to create that thread?

I'd start a new thread on the presa forum or the general forum update and plenty pics always appreciated maybe get back in touch and ask the breeders for the hip scores know that most just get them looked at and given the all clear from the vet which isn't the same as a proper hip scoring check ... Just keep an eye on her know its hard but try and prevent jumping on and off high objects etc but good luck the minute your backs turned they launch themselves lol for all this info I think another pic is warranted seein she's such a wee cutie :)

If possible find the bloodline of the mother and father. Presa canarios can range in size for different bloodlines quite a bit. This is where you will see bloodlines thinned out over the last 50-100 years. Some can be short and stocky which could be 30-40lbs less than others and some tall a little less stocky but get to 150lbs. My 10 week old presa is only 18lbs but should make it to 100lbs. With his bloodline he will be a lot smaller than most canarios you will see. His Mom is barnacan bull lines and dad is curto lines. Knowing this about you puppy will help with the pedigree and size of your pup so if possible ask your breeder you got the puppy from to see if they know the bloodlines.
Plus this only works with purebreds. Hope this helped

Shes only 8 weeks. Mastiff puppies should grow slow. That is the healthiest way. You want to make her bone and muscles all develop properly and thats where the slow comesin. No matter what she will get as big as shes meant to. She beautiful and perfect.

Hey all - Sorry for being MIA! Just wanted to post a few photos and a quick update on Reina. She is now 8 months old, and everything is going great! I'm still concerned with her weight/growth, as she seems to be on the smaller side. I'm feeding her 2x per day with Earthborn Holistic Coastal Catch Forumla according to guidelines on the bag. She just seems to be small. Anybody have opinions? After reading these repsonses I know it's best to just let nature run its course but just looking for some feed back. She also has some irritation/bumps/hairloss under her chin- I believe it's demodex as she had a brief issue with it very early on. Still have some medication the vet perscribed so going to give that a shot.
