5 month update neeko

Here's a few pictures of NEEKO at 5 months old. I advise anyone in the market for a presa to really do your research if you are looking for a WORKING PRESA. I wanted a working dog and ended up with a dog I honestly believe won't be able to do any type of protection work. These dogs are not well bred. A lot of people think these dogs are HARD AGGRESSIVE FEARLESS dogs and they aren't. They are very inconsistent you can breed two working presas and get a litter of pups that can't perform. I have socialized my pup from day one and he is scared of almost everything.

In order to protect they need to recognize that there are dangerous situations, and when they're little they react with fear. I'd be much more worried if they weren't scared of anything and just accepted all situations as being just dandy - that is a dog that will lick the burglar and asked to be petted. This fear in your pup means there is sensitivity to unusual circumstances, and that will come in handy later - I need my protection animal to be suspicious. He just needs a little more maturity, and he very much needs CONFIDENCE. You can build his confidence by organized obedience/rally classes and exposure to any and everything.

The jury is not out, of course, but I wouldn't give up yet!

wow, hopefully you will give your pup the benefit of doubt and let him mature. why such high expectations out of a 5 month old pup?
these are animals, not machines. I have had some friends with Presa and have never heard of such a thing. btw, he is adorable!!

I agree. He's still just a baby & maybe hasn't come into his temperament yet & if you're constantly showing frustration with him, he may be picking up on that. In order to be a confident dog, you have to be a confident leader. Not doubting you, but from reading your posts I can see your frustration. I understand, you wanted a strong dog, which I think you have, just need to give him time to mature & come into his own.

I'm actually going to keep him he's a great dog other than his lack of prey drive he's awesome. I'm going to wait it out with him and let him mature and keep building his confidence. I'm actually getting a belgian malinois aswell and compare the two as they grow.

That's funny. Compare a Malinois and a presa is apples and oranges. @ 5 months your pup is too immature to get a concept of how his prey drive will be. I know a presa owner who's dog just turned it on one day around a year old. I believe you need to try more games. Do you play tug war with your pup? Do you have a flirt pole for your pup? In some pups you must build their gameness. I say maybe you should try harder and not the pup.

Are there puppy classes for personal protection work?
Would that help develop prey drive (not sure why you WANT that one to be strong) and confidence?

Denna's prey drive didn't really develop until she was closer to a year old. Until then, the squirrels could stroll across the fence line and she'd just watch from the porch. It was quite the shock for them when she took out after them one day! :)

I agree he's still young and checking things out. Keep up the socialization, and I bet he turns it on one day.

Agnes went from being afraid of puddles, the wind, and drawers opening one week to charging at everything full force and defending her turf the next.

Give the pup some time.

And remember, the dog bases a lot of it's reactions on how YOU react; so if you expect him to be fearful of everything and get that kind of anxiety (whether you are reacting out of fear or anger) he is going to sense it from you and get scared.

Proud presa owner for the last twelve years................my only advise to you ......would be careful of what you ask for.........because you may actually get more than you want or might be able to actually handle.................enjoy the dog and just pay very close attention........they are amazing
