Top U.S. Boerbel Breeders

I have a friend who is looking for a top Boerbel breeder in the U.S. I don't know of any personally, and I thought this would probably be the best place to ask with the wealth of knowledge of some of the members. If you have any recommendations, please list them him.

His Puppy will be a pet/family protector. I looked at several websites, and the only advice I gave him was to make sure that the place you select does health testing. I mentioned after compiling a list of breeders who health test, select the look that you like best, talk to the breeder, and if you feel, comfortable buy from them. If there is a particular Boerboel breeder out there that does a great job, I was hoping someone would recommend them so that I could pass on that recommendation.

Mid Atlantic breeds out of standard.

Check out Fuller Boerboels.

Good place to start looking is here on Facebook

The breeders registered with EBBASA are following the breed standards and most seem pretty up and up.

Try to stay away from breeders that have black dogs that they are calling boerboels. In about a year you will not be able to register them. Powders and Black & tans will also be questioned.

Thanks for the link, and also the advice. I didn't realize that black wasn't in the breed standard until you pointed that out. After looking at these sites, i'm realizing how beautiful this breed is. I'm kicking myself for not even considering them when I was looking for a puppy. I didn't notice a weight range mentioned in the breed standard, is that not an issue, what range would you typically find in Males?

I have seen males from 120 to 210, it depends on the kennel and what lines they use in their program. Dogs from Australia and the UK tend to be heavier and larger, most look soft to me. The ones from Russia seem to be more muscular and fit for the size (210 now 198lbs). Here in the US we have a mix and mash of dogs most seem to be around a happy medium and males around 160 to 170 seems common. I have a large muscular female and a slender tall male, he is still a puppy so we just don't know how he will turn out yet.

At this time SABT/SABBA still recognizes the black dogs but the Registrar of South African Animal Improvement has stepped in and will probably demand they revert back to the standard prior to 2004. (No black boerboels). So any kennel breeding or selling them will not be recognized even the brown and proper dogs on the property will not be allowed to re-register.

Sorry I need to correct some wording here. Below should read "the Director of South African Animal Improvement"

I got my Boerboel from Wilby Boerboels. He is a beautiful 135# brindle. Very sweet personality. Would be a great dog for a family with young children as he just seems to know how to be gentle with those weaker than he is. He is confident without being aggressive. I love him to pieces.

Below are some of the better breaders in terms of quality and reputation. I personally like copperhead and proffers. There's also a guy named david harris out in Kansas that breeds great working dogs but have no idea what his kennel is called.

DKH (David Harris Kennels) is supposed to be one of the very best in the US.

If they are breeding or using black dogs i would not consider them in the better breeders lists.
Copperhead
Revelation
Proffer

If they list the circumference of his dogs head in the description just walk away.

Mike, if you had to recommend any 2-3 breeders in the Southeast, who would you recommend?

What i'm seeing is it's harder and harder to find breeders who don't produce any black dogs. Typically they are fawn but they'll have 1 or 2 that are black or brindle.

The brindles are safe if they don't follow the spitsvuur Jim or Muller dogs.
I will get back to you on the breeders. I am losing all confidence in them right now and need tome to re-evaluate what is going on.

I have been in contact with Wilby Boerboels and hope that my next pup comes from them. Their values are really in line with my own. They breed to the standard, they have fit dogs that are capable of working and their dogs are family. They do not sell off their old breeding dogs, their dogs stay with them until end-of-life. They have actually not had any litters in a couple of years because they have spayed their old females and are waiting for their young dogs to become breeding age. They were up front and told me the reasons behind their upcoming planned breedings and were honest about any faults that they see in their dogs.

I have been speaking with them on an almost daily basis via facebook, learning about them, who they are and their practices and in turn, allowing them to learn about me and who I am as a dog owner to ensure that it will be a good fit.

Wilby has one of the cleanest pedigrees I have seen. No PZD, Spitzvurr, or Ysterberg for 4 gens and they live with their dogs. I don't think I have ever seen a picture with a dog in a kennel or crate from her. To me that means the dogs are well socialized and grow up in a home environment, something I believe is crucial for the Boerboel.

Yes, I really appreciate the fact that her dogs are clearly a part of her family. I know the term "breeding stock" gets tossed around. In Wilby's case though, I don't get the sense that her dogs are viewed as "stock" in any way, shape or form.
