Debate section

The thread that was shut down I didn't think it was bad until it was until someone else took it to an unacceptable level. That is when it got outta control. Was it Originally a heated debate yes by all means. Was it outta control between the original 2 ? No. Did I feel the third person should of been banned after what was said ? HELL YES! That is my personal opinion. I've been a mod before and I didn't think it was that bad between the two. I think we will NEVER know if it will work unless we are given a chance to prove this can work. It's not fair for everyone to have to pay for a few others have done before. Just my personal opinion.
Okay hate to do this but third person being RAM that was bs what he did and when he/she said after first attack should of been removed from the site immediately. I do not feel all the other persons posts were outta control!

But thats the thing, it was a heated debate AND IT WAS FINE. The mods were obviously watching it, but they weren't shutting it down. It stayed in control for a fairly extended debate. We don't need a "no rules" section for heated debates. And in alot of ways that thread proves it.

And the problem with such sections is that you can't just create them based on the current board membership. You have to create them based on the future board membership, and considering that we already have had problems with members who"ll stoop to actual threats what in the world makes you think there won't be more?

Maybe the current board membership can handle such a section, maybe not. I happen to think that there are already several members who can't TBH. And yes the referenced thread is proof of that too.

You want to make it so that everyone has to check a box stating that they understand "no rules" and "leave it here" thats all fine and dandy. It won't stop people from resorting to threats if they're so inclined, and it won't stop people from taking it out of that section if they're so inclined.

I've been thtere and done that. And then had to clean up the mess afterwards when people eventually simply could not keep it within the required bounds. And I've seen it quite litterally split the community in question and it never recovered from it.

Its not like the board rules are that restrictive, we have debates and even heated debates quite frequently, heck we even use the words "stupid" and "dumb". And as long as everyone maintains maturity its fine. If you want a place where you can debate without staying mature then you shouldn't be debating with adults anyway.

As someone who's done mod work I think its a bad bad bad idea.

If everyone can remain mature its great. But if everyone can remain mature we don't NEED a "no rules" section for debate. Even heated debate.

The problem is that far to many people cannot remain mature and view the "no rules" as permission to become threatening and abusive.

And no matter how hard you try that sort of thing NEVER stays within the confines of its section. It'll spill out, via PM, via threads in the "rules" sections deliberetly aimed at the opposing side where they believe they can get away with it if they pretend to be polite. Maybe not right away. But it will eventually. If only because of someone with an superiority complex and a massive lack of maturity. But it will happen.
This is exactly my thoughts but it was two vs one with us mods so well see what the admins say.

I've been drunk in Vegas for the last couple days. Sounds like I've missed some fun.
