The joys of a dog whose neck is too big for a cone. What you can't see is the layers underneath the sock to help keep him from being able to access the abscess that needs to heal. I also have discovered that his feet are too big for my socks to fit normally. I had cut the toe and put it on upside down or it comes off on it's own.

Oh, Poor Kryten! What has happened? Poor Boy. He's such a trooper...always trying to put on the brave face for Mom. "I'm okay, Mom, but it hurts...and it itches. I'll try to not lick it, but the socks help. Thank you, Mommy!" (Just channeling the big boy, he wants his Mom to know he appreciates her.)

He was treated for what we think was either a skin irritation or infection that had become a lick granuloma back in November. The bumps created by his licking never went away and likely won't without surgery. Every so often it would seem to bug him and we would catch him licking it, a topical treatment would settle things back down. This time I tried something different based on a response from someone who uses a holistic vet. The bump has decreased in size drastically but there has been pus discharge for the first time ever and then a crack appeared across the bump. If you have ever had a blister under a callus you know the callus tends to crack after the blister deflates. We think this is what happened. The skin has gotten so thick that it trapped bacteria which then formed an abscess which has now 'popped'.

    Oooh, fun! (not really).
But, glad the abscess has popped and released the nasties; hopefully it can heal quickly now!

Eek...puss...ooh! Not my strong suit all the blood/guts/gore/puss stuff, so koodos to you for being a strong-stomached Mastiff Mommy.

Poor Baby! Poor Mommy! Hope it heals for good...Hugs to both of you

Lucky me. After years of very few medical issues I now have 2 dogs getting different medications for different problems. Jiggers is now getting eye drops for a suspected eye infection. It has been very weird here. Kryten has had more excess energy than Jiggers. I never thought I would be happy to have Jiggers acting like a brat out in public but it made me smile to see after they numbed his eye so they could check for injury.
Somebody is bored because his brother isn't playing with him.

Jiggers is fully healed. Kryten seems to be improving with moments where it seems worse, which makes sense for a deep infection that can't be reached.

Good to hear Jiggers is healed. How's Kryten doing now?

It looks like we might be almost passed the infection. He is such a good boy when it comes to cleaning it.

So much fun. The skin started to slough off on Saturday so I took him back in today. The vet did say that despite how much worse it looks that it also looks better which matches what I've thought. He is now back on 4 weeks of antibiotics because it is an open wound. I also need to flush the wound out daily using a flushing syringe since a portion of it is still covered. There is a good chance that the rest of the abnormal skin may slough off which will likely mean weeks of open wound care as the skin heals.

I'm so sorry this is taking so long. At least there's been some improvement. Zombies are pretty popular now and they have tons of sloughing skin. Kryten's just trying to be with the "in" crowd.

The vet I use didn't have a cone for our mastiff Mr. Chev. I found one at Tractor Supply that fit fine....he somehow hurt his paw and kept licking it...as dogs always do. Anyway, he's fine now. Our "Tractor Supply" was a good place to shop.
