Would You As A Dog Owner Do This?

[h=3]Heiry Question: Woman who died of cancer had guide dog euthanized and buried with her[/h]

An Indiana woman who died after a long battle with cancer on March 8 requested that her dog accompany her to the grave.

Sheila Stadler, 68, made the unusual decision to have her healthy 5-year-old guide dog, Toffee, euthanized and buried with her.
According to WTHI News 10, the decision has proven controversial, although it is legal.
The original news piece on the broadcaster's site has since been removed, but other news sites referencing the story said that Sheila's son mentioned that Toffee "wandered aimlessly" in the days following his mother's death.
Her family carried out her wishes and Toffee was put down and placed at the foot of her coffin, where the dog was displayed alongside her at her funeral.
They were buried together.
Would you carry out a relative's dying wish to euthanize their healthy dog?

No, that's just crazy. Who in their right mind would want to do something like that? If she loved her dog so much then why on earth would she want to kill it for no reason? Why would her family even agree to it?

 I pray I never meet anyone who even knows someone who did this. This is wrong on every level imaginable! If you love your dog so much, you do whats right for THEM, not what you THINK is right. This is just wrong!! Wrong wrong wrong!

That's incredibly selfish. The dog could have been used to help someone else in life. He was healthy and pretty young so why euthanize him? Doesn't make sense to me.

The dog was grieving. Was the son too stupid to recognize that? It would've taken some time but he would've gotten through it. No way in hell would I ever do this to a healthy, 5 year old dog. Like smokey said if the dog was sick or even very old then it might be considered.

I know I will not be buried, I want to be cremated & I want daisy's ashes mixed with mine. Sad to say it but if I die before her, she will live with my surviving family until her last day. But I would never request having her put down just bc I'm gone.

Well said raech...I found this article very disturbing, and I 100% agree with you and what everyone else has posted :)

As far as I'm concerned this is just a case of a selfish woman and a son who was to lazy to take care of her dog! He just took the excuse to have it put down because it was easier than stepping up.

That is maybe the most selfish thing I've ever read about a dog owner.

Oh wait, here in my community some chick hung her boyfriend's dog cause she didn't like it, needless to say she's going to prison.

I hope she gets her ass kicked, a lot .

I don't know that I necessarily see it as such a horrific thing. Am I thrilled with a healthy dog being euthanized? No, I'm not.

However, what if she had no family to care for the dog? Or what if the family's idea of taking care of the dog was to chain it in the back yard with little to no human contact? I know myself, I wouldn't leave my dog to 95% of my family because they don't care for animals properly.

Granted it being a guide dog, I'm sure there would be plenty of people that could and would take good care of him, but what if it wasn't a guide dog?

I'm sorry, but I'd rather euthanize my pet after I'm gone and know that he won't suffer, than have to worry that someone will abuse or neglect him. It's my responsibility to care for him, even after my death, so if I wasn't able to have a suitable home lined up that I new 100% for certain without any doubt would take care of him for the rest of his life, then yes I would have him euthanized. That's just me.

I hear what you're saying....but, I just feel that if she loved and valued her pet so much she would have made arrangements for the dog after she was gone; she could have...or had someone help her, arranged for a good home for her....this was a healthy dog with still a lot to offer.....maybe I just see it differently :)

I can totally see what you're saying too, and I do agree that arrangements could and should have been made - or at least attempted to be made. Maybe she tried? I dunno (I didn't click on the link, or look up any other articles other than what is posted in the OP).

Me personally, I just have a strong distrust of people. many people go back on their word, they say one thing and do another. Once I'm gone there isn't anything I can do about what happens to my dog. I just don't know that I would trust someone enough to keep their word to take care of my pet until his last days, even if I left a trust for him to be cared for the way I did. I'd be afraid they'd pocket the money and feed him Ol' Roy ...etc.

Hopefully it isn't something I will have to think of for a while!
