So excited, had the health screens started on Black Shadow's Sequoia and she got 80th percentile for PennHip and OFA normal elbows! Happy dance that my girl got good results!

That sounds awesome! How does one go about having the hips xrayed and examined such as for PennHip and OFA? Does any vet do this and how does the procedure go? How much does this usually cost? I'd just like to know just to know if my boy has good hips and elbows.

There is nothing we on with questions. To do PennHip you must go to a vet certified to do that procedure. They take 3 different shots to determine what they need for their equation. Those results are then compared to others in you breed and you are give the percentile of where you land in all the dogs tested. OFA does not require specific training but it is best if the person doing them has some sort of experience as you get one short sent and 3 vets view it and determine the scores. Elbows can also be done by a regular vet without too much issue

Price varies but Pennhip is usually 400+, OFA around the same and elbows are bit much, 100 or so if done at the same time. If in a more populated region costs go up

No worries, you can usually go on the PennHip site and find a listing of who is doing it in your area should you go that route. We like PennHip as it is a scientific equation that give you numbers to measure from. Whether I do a dog now or 10 years from now the process is the same and they compare it to others in the breed as opposed to all other breeds who are farther ahead in health testing advancement in their breeds.

Hector, when I priced it out Pennhip xrays for Apollo's hips would have cost me more than the OFA xrays for both hips and elbows. On the other hand, I live in NY state where everything costs more. Pennhip IS considered more accurate though. Pennhip requires sedation of the dog, while some vets will agree to do OFA xrays with a muscle relaxant only. And yup, while any vet can do OFA xrays you're best bet is to get somone with a clue to do them as how the vet handles the dog can make the difference between a dog getting "good" vs "excellent".
