Will the heat never end?

Hello! I am new to this site and it looks like a great place to get answers. We got our Dogue, Lu lu belle, last Thanksgiving and we love her to pieces! This is a new breed for us because normally we are lab owners. Lu lu is currently in heat because I had a prior vet tell me to let dogs go through one cycle before getting them fixed. Well we are at about 6.5 weeks and there seems to be no end in sight. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this strange? I know my chocolate lab did not go this long. Needless to say Lu lu and I are both ready to be done with diapers. Ugh. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If your DDB has been in heat for 6.5 WEEKS!!!!! Go back to your vet, your dog is sick.

Heat, from beginning to end, should not exceed 4 weeks.

Diapers, although helpful, can trap in bacteria and cause infection. 6.5 Weeks!!!!

We've been through three heats now, the first one seemed interminable, BUT, realistically, it was only four weeks. The last two were more like three, three and a half with blood, and then we guarded her for another week just to make sure no boyfriends were welcomed.

Good Luck

I can't remember how long my Doberman goes into heat, but it isn't that long (maybe 4 weeks?). I would probably call the vet to see if they want to see her. You could also take her temperature to see if she has a fever.

We adopted our Doberman a year ago, she is about 8, she had her first heat last summer and her second one right now. They really haven't been that bad for us, but I hear the first one is the worst. We use doggy panties lined with maxi pads for when she is loose in the house, but when we are at work she is crated and naked. I agree that they need a break from the diapers to clean and air out.

We also use Chlorophyll to cut the smell when she is in heat, and we haven't had any dogs seem overly interested in her.

Hi just to let you know that Autumn first heat cycle lasted 8 weeks she was fine but do get vet checks to make sure as we had Autumn checked after 4 weeks an her next cycle only lasted 2 weeks (if in doubt go to the vets)

Adina's (a neopolitan) first heat was 8 very long and messy weeks....but it will be good for Lu Lu Belle to not be fixed until after. We had Tali done about a week before she would have gone there because we weren't quite up for it, but it probably would have been better for her.
