whats everyones experience adopting

I have tried to adopt two different dogs recently one from an rescue another from the local pound. Called several times left messages and even visited the pound in person to try to start the process and I can't even get a phone call returned from either one. I just don't understand how a rescue or the town pound can't even call and respond to an inquiry. So frustrating to adopt getting ready to throw in the towel to be honest it just shouldn't be this difficult when you have large breed ownership history and a great reputation with your vet for the last twenty years.
Sorry just had to vent

Why don't you go to the shelter or rescue to check out the dogs? When adopting, it's very important to spend some time with the dog(s). The dog will choose you. A rehomed dog can take 8-12 months to fully trust you. Rehomed dogs need a lot of patience, training, some house training if they've been at the shelter for a while and lots of love.

I would not give up so easily. Shelter and rescue dogs need you!

FYI: I volunteered at a shelter for a year.

I will keep trying both places have part-time hours and as I mentioned the town animal control office has hours but no staff (Located in public safety) so I dropped by thinking I could see the dog. All dogs are off site somewhere else so I'm kind of stuck until someone makes contact.
I realize its not just show up and take a dog but when you can't start the conversation you are a poorly run outfit.
It just angers the animal lover in me when you read the terrible add and see the pics pleading for help and then they can't get off there ass and respond to inquiries to help the dog get out of its situation. Just a run of bad luck I'm sure bad for the dog and me.

Man, that really sucks. How do dogs get adopted? Must be a high kill shelter.

I contact my councilman or city council whenever I have issues with anything to do with the city. That usually gets fast results.

Frustrating!!

Keep after them. They do need you... they must be overwhelmed with other things.

You'd think getting adopters would be a top priority, but who knows what kind of red tape they have to get through to move the dogs around.
Might need to escalate to a local news reporter to get them press and maybe that will lead to them getting more help.

We have a rescue in my state that is the same, all the dogs are off site somewhere in foster homes. It's frustrating especially when an ad is posted as URGENT! Don't give up!

Every animal I've had up until Keeva was a rescue. I know that the shelters and rescues I have dealt with have all been woefully understaffed. They also usually are only open to the public and to take phone calls certain hours of the day or week. Keep trying, usually city websites will have hours posted and if the shelter is connected with someplace like petfinder where you can get an email addy you might get a faster response. Most everyone involved in rescue really want to place the animals but many of them also have other full time jobs and volunteer their free time. Good luck to you I hope you get a response soon.
