What would you do if you were out with your dog and a loose dog tries to attack

Yeah, I know for you guys its different.

Can you use a cattle prod or tazer?
Nope and I just Googled pepper spray...that illegal here too. We're not allowed to defend ourselves in the UK it would seem. If you harm a burglar you have to justify it here, showed you used only reasonable force and hope the thief doesnt press charges. I'm not kidding.

For a potential I attack I would use a prod or tazer NOTE: strike the dog BEFORE it makes contact ( your or your dogs)

Hmmm...interesting what about a stick or bat ( aluminum)?

That's kind of discouraging to read, what happens if the dog attacks a burglar in the act? Can the burglars still press charges?

Thats what I thought re: tazer and pepperspray, but I wasn't positive. Check citrus spray and defensive batons too.

But yah, I know they recently passed a law over there thats supposed to allow home owners to defend themselves, but I've yet to see it be used in court......

No bats, and I'm betting no batons......and likely yes, at the same time that the dog is deemed aggressive.....

I have been personally attacked 2 times once by a chow and once by a doberman. I broke the dobermans neck and I only needed a butterfly bandaid on my cheek and neck. The chow bit me on my butt so O punched the top of his head hard and he went down. Both dogs were up do date for shots so I was lucky. I have had 1 dog try to attack me and my dog on a walk and I stuck my boot out flat in it's chest and sent it running home. Any dog attacks my dog I will take extreme measures against that dog to save my dog, if the other dog turns to me it will give my dog a chance to get the upper hand against the attacker. If you see a dog running at you in attack mode yell at it like you are going to kill it. A dog that is not bite trained will often turn and run away. Be smart and be faster than the attacking dog. Side step and kick it hard just behind the last rib and it will either pass out or run away yelping. If it bites your leg punch it in the head or stick you fingers in it's eyes you can win if you stay smart and alert.

I want to live where Cody lives!
The yorkie was at fault for jumping in the bigger dog's mouth - and the OWNER was at fault for allowing him off leash. I LOVE it!

We're in city suburbs, so while we have some annoying dogs... I don't know of any that are vicious. Just this week two of our neighbor dogs bolted through the front door as we were walking by (pre-teen boy in the yard... must have left the door open) - Denna, still being a puppy, wanted to rush toward them for play. I made her stop and sit. The border collie got within about 50ft, then turned and went home. The lab mix, gruff up, came up to us, but the greeting went well, and Denna went into play-bow, fritz mode. By then the dog finally heard his boy calling and went home.

I guess I'm lucky to not have encountered a truly aggressive dog. I've been able to simply drop the leash and walk away on other occasions - I trusted by middle-aged 180lb rottie mix to take care of business and catch up to me... which he did... after just a few sniffs and a howdy-do with the other rottie that hopped out of a truck to come check us out.

My philosophy is to not run away (and become prey), and not act intimidating toward the oncoming dog (and become a threat). I stop and stand calmly, assuming the dog will either come for a greeting or return home - and give time for the owner to catch up with the dog, too. If anything, I'll talk to the dog in a nice girly voice, trying to put it (and my own dog) in a playful mode versus a guardian mode.

WOW! No offense but the UK's laws suck. Can't own any type of weapons, how do they feel about sticks? When I lived in the hood, where everyone let their mutts run free, I'd carry a sawed off shovel handel about 18 in. long. It's funny sometimes I wouldn't carry it that's always when the dogs would run up. When I would carry my stick I've never had any dogs approach us. Maybe it's just a coinsedence LOL.

I guess my actions would depend on the severity and speed of the other dog and how much time I have to react...

If I saw the loose dog from say, a block away, then I would stand still, calm, and as it approached I would in a deep commanding voice say GIT!

If the dog came up unexpectedly and a lot closer, I would move forward towards it and say GIT!

And last, if the dog was already engaging my dog - I would allow my dog to finish it.

We have LOTS of loose dogs out here in rural TN, unfortunately. People seem to think 'country' equals no rules for pets. But we still have leash laws in our county. And NO ANIMAL CONTROL.

I have been growled at by an agressive neighbor's dog. It's a large fluffy mix (think great pyrenees x something) around 80+ pounds. It somehow got through my fence and snuck up behind me while I was weedeating - I turned around to find this large dog growling at me, walking towards me stifflegged. I whipped the weedeater towards it and revved it up. It ran off. A few days later, it was on my farm again chasing my livestock - so I shot it.

The same neighbor who owned that dog at one time had 20 dogs total (living in cages). All are medium to large, they used to run loose as a pack. The pack chases deer, kills cats, chases horses/sheep/goats. I now carry my derringer or .45 when I am mowing or doing chores. There are only 7 dogs left. I am not the only person who has had to put down one of these agressive dogs. I don't like it, but even the cops told me to shoot them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Hagrid was a puppy, he was out with me while I was sweeping the barn. He never wandered far. But one of those dogs had gotten into my barn and was growling/barking agressively at the two of us. It would not go away even when I yelled at it. So, I picked up the nearest thing (which happened to be a hammer) and flung it at the dog. I missed, but the dog ran away scared. I did not have my gun on me that time.

We have a not nice one 2 doors down on either side. One is an intact male and has met the sharp edge of Hemi's temper so he doesn't get too close. The other one is fear biter and waits until you back is turned and then comes at you. I can tell when the dog has slipped it's tie as the dogs won't settle when we take them out. They stare in that direction and just watch, they also keep themselved between me and the house where the dog lives when they know she is off. The owners at first were telling everyone she was friendly and my dogs were over-reacting but that was until she charged out of her drive way and attacked this old lab in front of a bunch of people. Now if they know we are out the dog is inside. I don't see it much anymore but like everyone else said I would do what is needed to protect my dogs. I am responsible if they were to get off and hurt someone or their pets and I feel the same way if their dogs get off.

Its worse....lack of weapons only stops the law-abiding. and the the law-abiding end up in jail for using their fists to defend themselves

I tell my mom the same thing when she gets on that subject.

OT though thats kind of depressing......Mooshi's Mommy is this true?

You know whats funny that i wrote this thread this morning and today at 4:30 this afternoon, I was walking luna again and a little dog was in front I put LUna in a sit command because still being a pup we are working on the small dog greetings. Well the women said go ahead he takes his time. I said ok and walked by. Luna went to sniff the ground by him and he attacked her!!! She yelped and backed away! Got a bloody scratch on her face. I stood there very calm looked my girl over and went my way!! I wish my girl would have eaten it. Luna was being polite and this littel fu** went at her!! If it was the other way around this women would have my house!! She said sorry and I was pissed because I was being responsible knowing my dog and it seemed as though this had happen before with her dog. Funny her husband was in the car with their other dog waiting for her which I found was really weird. Thank God everyone is ok but I cant stand people really cant. To boot I get looks for having a majestic large well behaved dog and these little shit dogs get away with anything!!!! Really Pissed tonight

I've never been attacked on walks , only charge but I am always armed cause people are crazy.I sprayed myself with pepper spray once (LONG STORY ) and can tell you that I don't think it would stop a aggresive dog ,you better carry a knife also.
I have been attacked in my own yard by a pitt mix and whacked it with a shovel . I followed the dog home , knocked on the door with the same shovel and told them what would happen next time.I never seen that dog again.
