My oldest daughter just had a baby. The baby is still in NICU, & daughter is out of the hospital. She is an atheist, & makes no bones about it, although she was raised as a christian. Nine months ago, she & her fiance were both working, had a nice little place, & everything was golden. But like you, things just took a downhill slide, & everything was lost except for the baby. They didn't even have a place of their own; they were on the streets begging for money to keep them going. Her dad & I, along with friends, pressured her into going to various churches for help. While she's still on a slippery slope, things are getting better. The programs that churches have aren't just for their parishoners, or even Christians. The help is there for anyone who needs it. Don't feel bad about reaching out, I've been there/done that. One year I was funneling $20 a paycheck into the food bank that the local church was running. The next year, I was standing in line for some of that food. I'm back on the giving side, but like everyone else these days, it's a day to day thing. Ask for help, accept it gracefully, and when you're back on your feet, be the one to help.
