  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Welts - Allergic reaction?

I've had English Mastiffs all my life but this is a first. This morning we woke up and our girl had welts all over her sides. They itch as well. Her mouth has swollen up as well.
We don't feed her human food but our two year old dropped a piece of apple and Harley (our mastiff) ate it before we could get there.
We gave her four 25mg Benadryls to see if it gets better but so far no change.

Could be, but if benedryl continues not to work, or especially she starts having trouble breathing, to the vets, asap!

Yeah, could be. Benedryl isn't an instant fix though, it could take up to a week before it clears up. IF it's an allergy thing.
My boy just got over his latest allergic episode and it took 5 days to completely clear up. He was taking two 25mg in the morning, 1 in the afternoon, and 2 more in the evening.

I agree with Ruth. Number one watch for breathing problems. Check tongue for swelling and airways clear every few hours or more if needed. 1 mg of benadryl for every 1 pound of dog every 8 hours. If no signs of getting better after 24hrs, I would get to a vet.

It's getting worse. They're driving her crazy. No. No new meds or anything just the apple core yesterday.
I figure age probably 150lbs now. Maybe we'll step up the Bennies to 6 next time we give it to her.

you said her mouth was swollen, check her tongue, and make sure she can breathe ok. And keep checking, and if your vet isn't closed for the night a phone call might not be a bad idea. I don't like that they're getting worse while she's on the benedryl....

Has she been bitten or stung possibly? With the mouth swelling she could have bitten a bee or spider. Mine chase "flies" and one stung Bones this year. Mouth, muzzle was swollen and there were some hives. Nowhere near as bad as your baby's picture. Benadryl is 1-25 mg tablet/cap, per 25 lbs. of body weight, according to our vet. I vote vet asap.

I vote vet asap, too! They can give her a shot of steroids, to help speed up the recovery. Poor baby girl...keep us updated!!

I vote vet ASAP too. There was another thread on here, kinda the same situation & I believe he ended up taking his pup to the vet also. If the Benadryl was helping you should see a decrease in size of the welts. If her mouth is swollen maybe its possible she got stung by a bee or maybe ate some ants...I'd be very concerned over a swollen mouth. Keep us posted!

Oh wow, that got worse really fast. I hope you can remedy this soon. Sorry for Harley. :(

She does chase flies. After reading some of the comments here, we're thinking she might have caught a bee. One side of her snout is noticeably more swollen than the other.
No swelling of the tongue. Breathing is fine. She's eating and drinking fine. She does have some diarrhea though.
If she's not any better in the morning we'll call the vet.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1353378887.386003.jpg

I think I'm the one raechiemay referred to. Brought Walter to vet and got a steroid shot. They also gave Benadryl and he cleared up within 24 hours.

Up all night with Harley. Shes better but hasn't fully recovered yet. Things got real bad for awhile there. The hives didn't allow her (nor the wife and I) any sleep. They spread to her back and face. Her eye lids had swollen up as well but her tongue remained normal and she continued to eat and drink normally.
Harley couldn't decide if she wanted in or out. Apparently the cool air felt good on the hives but she's an inside dog and couldn't stand too much of it. I splashed pool water on her and scratched her with a brush all night and she loved that.
They're almost completely gone now but here's a pic from last night. Thank you all for your advice. You provided solid guidance and helped to keep us calm. Sleep is now in order. Thank you all.

Other thread was me and Jade, We went to the Vet on Day 2 because it was so bad even with Benadryl I was afrqaid of a anaphalaxis reaction which can happen at any time when something like this comes up. 4 hours after her shot we had it under control. Another Heads up is I am getting reports of several other Mastiffs suddenly getting hives in the past 6 weeks yours is the third in 1 week that I know of. If you want instant relief get her to the vet for a fast acting steroid shot. Your dog has exactly the same welts as Jade did. Not telling you what to do but it is not something to take lightly.

That list pic would scare the hell out of me. I'm glad she's doing better, keep us posted.

All gone. We have a happy 10 month old again.
Thanks again, SBD
