Weight Gain

We got a male english mastiff on March 4th. He gained 4 pounds his first week here. Is that a normal amount, low or high? Just trying to get an idea...Thanks!

Details?

How old is he? Is he a rescue? Was he under weight? Are you feeding the correct amount of food recommended for his weight? Is it a high quality food? How much exercise is he getting?

Those answers will help us help you :)

He is about 10 weeks old, purchased from a reputable breeder, flown in. We are letting him eat whenever he is hungry. He is eating pro plan, which is what he was on when he came. He does not appear too thin. Just wanting to make sure he's not developing too slowly or too quickly. When he went for his after flight vet check, they said he was fine weight wise and he gained the 4 pounds the first week home. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I want to be safe.

sounds normal but i would get on some sort of organized feeding schedule. these dogs love food and if left to just eat whenever they will over indulge. we love em big but not fat, its bad for the joints.

my EMs food is left out with the exact amount of food he needs for the whole day and he will take pretty much all day to eat it so as long as hes not eating a days worth of food on one setting he should be fine. My male EM has been gaining 4 to 5 pounds a week hes now 15 weeks and 47 pounds

We have always free fed my dogs, until Aurora as she was older when she came, and have never had a weight issue. In fact we have a problem keeping weight on our Boxer. It has also helped with issues like Bloat as he and our last CC wouldn't gulp their food, just eat when hungry. The other nice thing was the complete lack of food aggression/issues. We would put the allotted amount in the bowl and worked great. I would have loved to continue but Aurora came later from a larger pack and they were fed in their crates, so we have since changed to a feeding schedule.
I think the norm is 5 lbs a week with young CC so I would imagine that or more with an EM.

If he is only eating the recommended amount of food thru out the day then ok. But if he is eating it all at once, then he should be on a scheduled feeding. Also I would recommend changing his food to a higher quality no grain low protien food. Pro Plan isnt all that great of a food...
