My parents have a 10 month old male Italian Cane Corso Mastif - Hugo. They have trained and bred dogs for decades but this is their first mastif. Despite all our efforts to train the dog, he is showing very aggresive and stuborn behavoir, refusing comands unless he wants something. We've been socializing him with another mastif and they've been getting along until tonight. It was a bad fight. The other dog is torn up but should be okay. Hugo will need stitches. My parents have decided to put Hugo down and given his aggression level, I have to agree.

I love this dog and he has bonded to me. I am hoping I can find somewhere to take the animal but I would only give it to someone with a lot of experience dealing with these dogs who can train it properly. This dog has shown very high aggression levels. I have posted urgent because my parents are likely to make a decision about the animal very soon. We are in Surrey BC Canada. You can contact me at MCharke (at) aol (dot) com or call me at Seven, Seven, Eight - Eight, Four, Seven- Zero, Eight, Six, One at any time.

It sounds to me like he is going through his teenage stage where they push and test the limits and boundaries. Are you parents open to getting a trainer in or have they completely washed their hands of Hugo and want rid? I think having him put down is a little drastic and I hope that someone here can step up and offer Hugo a new home. It would help to see some photo's of him.

I agree, teenage years. He needs training and patience. I hope they do not put him down just because he needs more training and patience.

Agreed. You dont need to put a dog down for dog on dog aggression. Please call a trainer, there are a few around.

Where did you get him from? I wish I could help but I have a house full already.

Crisis averted. Thank you for the replies. We have taken the dogs to the vet who gave us very positive feedback, mirroring a lot of what is being said here. The injuries are not considered very serious either. We're looking into training, nuetering - although I'm told it's still too early -, and we now have time to consider finding another home or heavily investing in getting a trainer who knows these animals. I will pass on the information about this being the dog's "teenage" years. I think that will help.

We got the dog from a friend who decided to breed their dog. We normally get dogs from breeders.
