as most would. :) She doesn't mind other people. She doesn't feel a need to see them like Dozer does. She's friendly with people and dogs of all kinds. We are still cautious though, since we do not know what has happened to her in the past.

we stayed for a few minutes and then left. He is doing okay now, nothing out of the ordinary. Hopefully he isn't scarred for life.

Hope so too. Depending on his temp he may bounce back. :)

Thor was bitten by another dane when he was 8 months I worried how it would affect him. Luckily it didn't affect his reactions to other dogs.

Sometime you should visit the Golden Retriever Forum. I lurk there all the time; I used to work with them & still love them. Most golden owners, however, are a different story. They're usually snobs, who think that all other breeds are heathens. Could be that this guy's dog was attacked in the past, or HIS dog is dog aggressive. You would be surprised at how many goldens have issues, mostly due to their owners IMO. Or he's just a typical golden owner who thinks all other off leash dogs are going to eat his beautiful blonde. Never mind the fact that HIS dog was off leash, too. Moron.

Hedgehog obviously:scared2: I wasn't paying attention I didn't realize the guys dog was off leash too! In that case I would totally be PO. Sorry!

I thought he had his dog onleash and Dozer was off leash. My cleaning chemicals are starting to get to me.

Not defending the guy for hitting your dog AT ALL, but I honestly can't stand when people have their dogs off leash in areas that arent designated as off leash. So in that situation I would have been irritated with all 3 of you. Because people don't seem to think leash laws apply to them I can't take my Doberman out on walks safely through most parks around me. He's male/male aggressive, he's fine if everyone is on leash, but if a strange dog comes charging up to him it could get ugly. The owner's usually yelling "he's friendly" from 100 ft away, and I'm left there yelling MINE'S NOT! And some how I get looked at like the bad person with the bad dog, even though they weren't following the law. Anyway, because of this it really upsets me when people just let their dogs run off leash and 99% of the time these people have little to no verbal control over the dog, it's not fair to me and my dog because we don't get to use public parks with leash laws.

So that's my rant.

Yeah ... nobody's dogs should really have been off-leash regardless of recall. I don't think the guy should have smacked Dozer but I've been in a situation where a strange dog is rushing at me and Oscar's on high alert and I have about 10 seconds to think and it is always "what can I do to stop that dog before it reaches us". I've had some pretty solid kicks in reserve at times. I don't want to have to get to that, but Oscar's always leashed on a walk and if an unknown dog - friendly or aggressive - comes at us I can't risk it or Oscar getting hurt because the other owner hasn't done their job. I'm with NeoBull on this one. There are definitely whole areas of the local parks I can't go to (including a really cool waterfall) because so many people walk right past the Leash and Pick Up sign, snap off the leash, and go play.

I couldn't have said it better myself! We had a golden growing up. She was extremely dog aggressive. She had also bitten me and my brother a handful of times. She died at age 13 from cancer. I am going to have to go lurk on the forum now

Don't be sorry! Either way, on both hands it could have been handled differently. All 3 dogs were off leash. I wish I could have heard more of what the golden said to the akita guy but he seemed in a hurry and didn't say much else. I saw them having a heated discussion but couldn't quite make it out.

Will all parks be marked as leash dogs only? Or just designated places? I guess this park doesn't have any signs on dogs. Should I just assume from now on?

All of the parks around me have signs, but I'd assume that the dogs should be leashed unless you see a sign stating otherwise because I'm sure the city has leash laws, so it's really any public place unless it says otherwise...

Are you in the Twin Cities area? Because there are some great off leash parks around there!

Okay. It is a smaller park. That may be why it says nothing. There are. Also somegot that stateI specifically. I am 2 and 1/2 hours south of the twin cities about half hour from la crosse wi.

I agree with NeoBull and Marrow. Titan doesn't like other dogs at this time. When dogs run at him, I have to grab him by the collar and straddle him. I do a kick motion to keep the other dog away from him. If Titan were to hurt a poodle (which happened yesterday), they would probably tell me to put Titan down when the poodle was off leash.

Any especially public park has required leash laws unless stated otherwise.

Musicdeb exactly, our guys would be the first to get penalized, its a sad reality. :(

I agree that I do not want dogs approaching me and my dogs in a leashed area (I avoid off lead places) I too would use body blocks, voice ect. to keep my dog and theirs safe.

An umbrella is a great tool to take with you to keep distance, and many dogs are frightened of them.

My main concern of this story is to Point out how incredibly dangerous it is to strike a dog ever, especially one you are not familiar with. What a way to trigger a dog attack!

Yep and unfortunately the defence of "He hit my dog first" wouldn't stand up one bit.

Well I understand where the man is coming from kinda. Since his dog was also off leash it's a little different.

I take my Rottweiler to public parks all the time and the only time she is off leash in one is when she is swimming in the creek(more like river). She listens 100% of the time when I tell her to come or just plain stop walking towards others when in the creek. We go to a part that is very low traffic and I can see people coming far enough away to determine if I need to leash her or not.

What gets on my nerves is when I have her on leash in a high traffic area and someone lets their dog do whatever. Like yesterday I took her to a concert a friend was playing for some middle school running event. Hundreds of people and just two dogs (zillie and someone else). Well Zillie was on leash and under control but this other dog was just dragging his leash around going up to strangers and then ran up to zillie! His owners didn't even bother getting him when I gave the dog an evil look.
It pissed me off because those people didn't know that my rottweiler isn't dog aggressive. Zillie loves other dogs but what if she didn't?
What if she attacked this lab mix because it came up to her? Zillie would have been looked at as the bad dog even though she was on leash. I was ready to kick that dog if it had showed teeth at Zillie. I don't care if all those people saw me do it or not, I would protect MY dog.

If the dog doesn't have recall down then it shouldn't roam free... Get a long training lead and that way you could at least step on it...

We have a dog park but I don't like going to it. Way to many rude people and rude dogs.

I didn't mean to upset anybody with my post.. and am thankful for all the answers. So thank you for your answers and being kind. I definitely learned a lot that day.

We actually have a large back yard. Looks like the fence will be going up sooner than later :)
