Throwing Up

Hank is almost a month into raw feeding and hasn't really had any problems thus far. We started with chicken and have since added turkey, beef and pork. He hasn't had much problem with stomach upset. He has occasional diarrhea when he doesn't get enough bone but no big deal. But the past 3 days he has thrown up while in his crate overnight...2 nights I heard him doing it and then he ate it back but last night I didn't hear it but when I went to get him out of his crate this morning there were chicken bones outside of his crate and the puke smelled awful. I had to bathe him because he smelled so bad. When I cleaned up the bones they were very hard..they felt and looked like cooked chicken bones but of course they were not. Is this normal?? Could he still be adjusting or is there some other issue??

Its possible its a couple things.

It may be to much bone, and so his body is rejecting it up front

It may be what I call "hunger pukes" where the dog's stomach is expecting food and the acid builds up, and eventually the dog pukes. Its not unusual for a raw fed dog to puke up a few pieces of bone when this happens

He's not getting any new types of bone lately is he? Sometimes when the dogs body has trouble adapting it'll puke it up, and the dog will re-eat it and it'll digest better for some reason.

I assume he's pooping normally?

He has had loose stools on and off since we started raw...sometimes really hard and sometimes really soft. He hasn't had any new kinds of bones lately..It is only happening like in the middle of the night or early morning..maybe he is hungry and I should try feeding him something before bed? I think he probably would have re eaten it had he been able to get to it but it was outside his crate.

Try giving him a small snack before bed, save a little from dinner, doesn't have to be tons, and give it to him right before bed and see if that helps.

Just out of curiosity, what bones has he been getting? I'm no expert, but what is the average meal?

Boone used to as well, now all he gets are breasts bone in (very rarely a neck if he's had three straight boneless meals) for the bone content, and no more throw up :) I discovered it by accident actually.

He has been getting leg quarters and drumsticks..the leg quarters are the meals he threw up after. He has also been having pork ribs and necks and hasn't seemed to have a problem with those..I have given him turkey necks too and he didn't have a problem with those. He seems like he needs a little bit of meat at each meal or he will have loose stools..I haven't quite found the perfect formula to keep him regular but he is doing so much better on raw than he was kibble!!

Apollo was like that for a while, he had to have a little bone with everything he ate or he got the runs. Made dividing up the bone daily interesting. He's over that now thankfully....

Sorry to hear Hank is having issues. Sounds like a little too much bone to me. You'll get the hang of it as to how much bone and meat to give him by his poop. When Titan's poop gets too soft, I'll add a little more bone. If his poop is too chalky, I'll add a little more meat. Generally, his poop is just right. I can't believe I just said that... :) Hank's poop should turn white after a day or so, does it? If it does, then you're feeding him the right amount of meat and bone.

Yes his poop does turn white after a day..looks like pieces of chalk lol..even if it is runny it still turns white..I think I am going to try cutting back on the bone and see if that helps.
